Añadir al carritoIn contemporary tooled leather. First edition. Text in Greek and Latin. Woodcut device on title page. Woodcut initials. In contemporary tooled leather. [5] [1 (blank)] 16 [4 (first 2 leaves of afterword in reversed order)] 710 [4 (last 2 leaves of afterword in reversed order)] 11312 p. [Complete.]. Early Greek edition, with an important preface and afterword by Ulrich Zwingli, Olympian odes with immense contemporary annotation. An early, the third Greek edition (first by Aldine in 1513) of Pindar's four odes dedicated to the Panhellenic Games, edited by Ulrich Zwingli and Jakob Ceporin (Wiesendanger, 14991525), the first Reader of Greek and Hebrew at Zwingli's school of theology in Zurich. In the preface, dated 24 February 1526, Zwingli, who was deeply impressed by Pindar, called him later the Prince of Poets, addressed the students of languages, and encouraged them to study the classical texts, that could help with the interpretation of the Bible, especially the Psalms, even gave examples of how obscure passages from the Bible could be clarified by comparing them to Pindar's Odes. (Dinkova-Bruun 2014) For such blasphemy copies of the edition were later mutilated and the preliminaries excised to remove Zwingli's presence. The afterword, also by Zwingli, is about the co-editor Ceporin, who died a few months before in December of 1525. USTC 684138; Adams P1222 Literature: Dinkova-Bruun, G. (2014) Preface, Catalogus Translationum et Commentariorum. . Old ownership inscriptions on title page ("F. Danneau Doct. Med. Reg." strike through and written "P. Morellus" over - 17th century; "Courcier" - 19th century; "ad Esselin"), also blind-stamped. Possible ownership inscriptions on front and rear endpapers. First part heavily annotated by a contemporary neat hand (in Greek). Later, 19th(?) century handwritten table (in French) on rear free endpaper (probably unrelated). The 8-page afterword is bound between pp. 67 and 1011 in a random order. Binding rebacked, restored. Front free endpaper renewed. Occasional stains, few leaves dog-eared. Otherwise in very good condition. First edition. Text in Greek and Latin. Woodcut device on title page. Woodcut initials.
