Für seine Studenten verfasste er Das Buch der metaphysischen Durchdringungen als eine kurze, aber sehr konzentrierte Einleitung in die Metaphysik des Seins. Metaphysik ist für ihn die Erkenntnis der höchsten Wirklichkeit, die in einer überbegrifflichen geistigen Schau und vor allem in den göttlichen Offenbarungen verankert ist. Sie befähigt den Menschen, das Absolute vom Relativen, das Wirkliche vom Unwirklichen zu unterscheiden. Im Unterschied zu Avicenna (Ibn Sina) (980-1073) lehrte MullaSadra den Vorrang des Seins vor dem Seienden, und diese Wendung ist mit Recht als eine 'Revolution' in der Geschichte der islamischen Philosophie bezeichnet worden. In Europa hat, abgesehen von Thomas von Aquin (1225-1274), erst Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) diese ontologische Differenz zwischen Sein und Seiendem deutlich und nachdrücklich aufgezeigt.
