Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, exceptionally rare offprint, and an inscribed presentation copy, of the foundation work of complex dynamics. Although isolated examples had been found earlier, this work provided the first large family of examples of fractals. Fatou (1878-1929) and Gaston Julia (1893-1978), independently but simultaneously, studied the iteration of a function f of a complex variable z, i.e., f(z), f(f(z)), f(f(f(z))), . . . The 'Fatou set' of f consists of the values of z with the property that all nearby values behave similarly under repeated iteration of f. Fatou showed that the set of values not in the Fatou set, now called the 'Julia set', is typically a fractal. "The most fundamental and incisive contributions [to the theory of iterated functions] were those of Fatou himself, although Julia developed much closely related material at more or less the same time. Julia, who had been wounded during the War, was awarded the 'Grand Prix des Sciences mathematiques by the Paris Academy for his work'" (John Milnor, Dynamics in One Complex Variable, 1999). The huge amount of interest in the field of iteration of functions of one complex variable, led by Fatou and Julia, continued until the 1930s when it inexplicably faded into obscurity. It wasn't until the 1980s that it revived, probably due to the advent of accessible computers which enabled others to visualize the extraordinary beauty and complexity that Fatou and Julia obviously understood. It was also in the 1980s that the 'Mandelbrot set' rose to prominence. It is closely related to Julia sets: for the function f(z) = z^2 + c, where c is a constant, the Mandelbrot set is the set of values of c for which the Julia set of f is connected (in a single piece). Provenance: Edouard Goursat (1858-1936), French mathematician (pencil inscription on first page of text, 'A Monsieur Goursat / Hommage respecteux / P Fatou'). Goursat asked Fatou to prepare a second edition of Appell & Goursat's Théorie des fonctions algébriques (1895) and add material on automorphic functions. Fatou wrote such a major exposition of the subject that it was decided to publish Fatou's material as a separate volume, becoming Vol. 2 of Théorie des fonctions algébriques, which appeared in 1930 as a three-author work. Fatou's work on iterated functions was published in three parts in the Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France in 1919 and 1920; the present offprint contains all three parts. We are only aware of one institutional copy of this offprint (in France, Benoit Mandelbrot's copy). No copy in auction records. 8vo, pp. 279, [1], [2, blank] (lightly browned). Original printed wrappers (a bit soiled, spine worn with some loss).

Añadir al carritoBerlin, Stockholm, Paris, F. & G. Beijer, 1906. 4to. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Acta Mathematica", Vol, 30, 1906. Entire volume offered. Stamp to title page, otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 355-400. [Entire volume: 6, 410 pp]. First appearance of Fatou's seminal Ph.D. thesis in which he presented his famous Fatou theorem, which state that a bounded analytic function in the unit disc has radial limits almost everywhere on the unit circle. This theorem was at the origin of a large body of research in 20th-century mathematics under the name of bounded analytic functions. Fatou set is the 'regular' appearance of the chaotic Julia set and both if these initiated what was to be known as "complex dynamics" which eventually resulted in the Mandelbrot set.Fatou's thesis also include the first application of the Lebesgue integral to concrete problems of analysis, mainly to the study of analytic and harmonic functions in the unit disc. He furthermore studied for the first time the Poisson integral of an arbitrary measure on the unit circle and also made a major contribution to finding a solution to the related question of whether conformal mapping of Jordan regions onto the open disc can be extended continuously to the boundary."He contributed important results on the Taylor series, the theory of the Lebesgue integral, and the iteration of rational functions of a complex variable. When studying the circle of convergence of the Taylor series, several points of view are possible: (1) one can look for criteria of convergence or divergence of the series itself on the circumference" (2) one can consider the limit values of the circle of the analytic function represented by the series and try to determine where these limit values are finite or infinite, as well as the properties of the functions of the argument represented by the real and imaginary parts of the series when these functions are well defined" (3) one can consider what points on the circumference, singular in the Weierstrass sense, also determine the analytic extension of the series. The link between these problems led Fatou to formulate a fundamental theorem in the theory of the Lebesgue integral." (DSB).
