Henry Jonathan Williams (1791-1879), the son of General Jonathan Williams, was married to Julia Rush, a daughter of Dr. Benjamin Rush; Williams was a lawyer and served as the executor of the large estate of his brother-in-law James Rush. The book is bound in dark leather with a paneled spine and faded gilt inlay. Boards show moderate shelf wear to covers and edges. Rubbing wear along board edges. Mild bumping to fore corners and tail of spine. Mild chipping and loss of leather at head of spine. Crack in leather of spine runs from head to ridge of first panel. Mild splitting near bottom of joints. Small paper label adhered to spine. Text block shows moderate edge wear on edges. Stain on bottom edge of text block affects some pages throughout the center of the book (text unaffected). Splitting at front hinge. Insect damage in bottom corners of first pages of book, up through page iii of the Vol. I preface. Bookplates on front and rear pastedowns. Contemporary inscription on front flyleaf. Shelved in Room A. Faint stain at top of gutter on pages xvii-xxiv of Vol. I. Extra material on fore and top edge of title page of Vol. II due to printing error, which has been folded inward. All three volume are written entirely in French. Collated, complete. Edited by, and with copious notes and details of the author by the French theologian, translator and writer Pierre Coste. The new edition of this early eighteenth century work. Michel de Montaigne was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance. His Essais were originally written between 1570 and 1592 and the first collection were published in 1580. In uniform calf bindings. Externally, worn. Severe loss to spines and extremities with heavy rubbing to boards and to the remainder of spines. All joints are tender. Both hinges to volume I are weak and may detach in postage. Front hinge to volume II is tender with cords showing with the rear hinge slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume III is tender with the rear hinge weak, may detach in postage. Large crack centrally down the spine of volume III. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper, S D Horton to C P Greenough. Another prior owner's signature to the verso of title page of all volumes. Title page to xxxii has separated from textblock. Binding to volume III is particularly weak between pages 264 and 265 where the binding has split and held by cords only. Otherwise, internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with instances of scattered spots. Fair. Various (ilustrador). book.
