First edition thus, by permission of Frederick Muller Ltd. 188pp. and many full-page and in-text black and white illustrations by J.M. Kupfer. Ninke, or Nienke, van Hichtum was a pseudonym of Sjoukje Maria Diderika Troelstra-Bokma de Boer (1860-1939), a well-known Frisian Dutch children's author and translator. Van Hichtum wrote books and stories in both West Frisian and Dutch. Afke's Ten was first published under the title Afke's Tiental in 1903, and the present edition has been translated and retold in English by Marie Kiersted Pigeon. It forms 'Section J No. 12' of the publisher's Heritage of Literature series. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with silver titling on the spine and silver stamped publisher's emblem on the bottom corner of the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards and light bumping to the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with faint traces of an old erased price on the top corner of the title-page.
