SYNOPSIS: Now entering its seventeenth season, Man Alive remains the longest-running program of its type in the history of television. Host to more than a million viewing Canadians and many Americans each week, Roy Bonisteel has often been compared with that other superb interviewer, Edward R. Murrow. He is the deserving recipient of numerous awards for excellence in broadcasting and his approach is well summed up in the Hamilton Spectator's comment: "Man Alive is the only network show - Canadian or American - to table social and religious issues in an intelligent, non-preachy way." Man Alive: The Human Journey is Roy Bonisteel's second book and every viewer of the program will want to read it. By distilling the content of a number of his programs - both recent and older vintage - Bonisteel here presents his own assessment of contemporary issues ranging from the status of the elderly in our society to the current crisis in the Vatican; from the exploitation of the young to the ever-present threat of nuclear catastrophe. And in touching upon the various aspects of faith, which is central both to Man Alive itself and to this book, Roy Bonisteel also inevitably includes here four unforgettable portraits of men of faith: the Dalai Lama, Bishop James Pike and Canada's Paul-Emile, Cardinal Leger and Archbishop Edward "Ted" Scott. Other memorable portraits feature Dr. Helen Caldicott, the anti-nuclear activist, atomic scientist Dr. Edward Teller, Diane Dupuy and her wonderful Famous People Players, and Father Lucien Larre of Regina's Bosco Homes. It is thought-provoking and stimulating material, with each chapter illuminating some aspect of the human journey and all of it presented in Bonisteel's special lucid and persuasive way. Roy Bonisteel has been the host of CBC-TV's Man Alive series for seventeen years and a broadcaster since 1951, when he joined CJBQ Belleville, Ontario, after a stint in journalism. In 1953, he moved to station CKTB St. Catharines and was for twelve years a popular radio personality in the Niagara area. Then, in 1965, he went to Vancouver as Director of Broadcasting for the United Church of Canada and two years later became National Radio Coordinator for the Anglican, Roman Catholic and United Churches. In 1970, he resigned this position to devote all his efforts to the Man Alive television series. Among the awards and recognition Roy Bonisteel has received as a result of Man Alive are the ACTRA award for the best television host in Canada and honorary doctorates from universities that include Laurentian in Sudbury, Queen's in Kingston, Mount St. Vincent in Halifax and the University of Windsor.
