With the large engraved folding map of Kent, the folding engraving of Bromley College, and the engraved plate illustrating p.8 and p.49. Also with the etymology and index at rear, and additional MS notes to front and rear endpapers. Recently re-backed in tan calf, with raised bands, gilt titles to an original black label laid over, and the original tan full calf boards with blind decoration to margins. Map shows extensive archival repairs, is backed onto a new sheet of thick paper, and has been reinserted facing the title page. Extensive and very neat black ink notes to front pastedown, and to three inserted leaves at rear; two leaves in an eighteenth-century hand, the rest circa 1960's and 1970's. Extra-illustrated with some Kent engravings; one inserted to face p.278, the rest loose at rear. Occasional neat notes in black ink to margins. Additional notes inserted on stubs to face p.126 and p.141. Occasional light toning and spotting throughout. A neat, pleasing example, augmented with some carefully-applied scholarly notes. Very good. Philipott's volume on the history of Kent was first published in 1659, notoriously containing many errors. With the errors of pagination called for. The first ten leaves a little damaged at the extremities, large folding map laid on linen with one or two areas of loss due to either worming or the double folds present as issued, tipped in, otherwise in good condition. Thomas Philipott's 'Villare Cantianum' in its first edition of 1659 has become a rare book. A key work in the history of the county of Kent it is also renowned for bearing a later state of Philip Symonson's large two-sheet map of the county. Although the author is stated to be Thomas Philipott it is recognized that much of the work was that of his father John (1589-1645) who was born in Folkestone. He would become MP for Sandwich and was a royalist during the Civil War. He wrote 'The New Description of Kent' which was never published and it is this which is believed to have formed much of his son's work. Thomas (d.1682) spent much of his life in Greenwich.Philip Symonson's map of Kent first published in 1596 is generally considered to be the FIRST PRINTED LARGE SCALE MAP OF AN ENGLISH COUNTY. Barber describes it as 'one of the most sophisticated maps to be produced in England under Elizabeth.' Symonson (d.1598). The two sheet map was engraved by Charles Whitwell (fl.1593-1611) a maker of mathematical instruments who was apprenticed to Augustine Ryther in 1582. In 1590 he became a freeman of the Grocer's Company. He was also the engraver of a recently discovered small silver globe, the earliest surviving made in England. When Robert Dudley fled to Italy in 1606 it is known that he took ten of his instruments. Only two complete examples of the first state are known; in the British Library and the British Museum. As did so much material of the day the copper plates ended up in the hands of Peter Stent sometime around 1645 when he at first added his imprint. Of this only three examples are recorded. A third state was prepared in 1659 for inclusion in Thomas Philipot's work. For this he employed the services of the great Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77). Pennington describes the engraver in glowing terms: 'Of all etchers, Hollar is certainly the most varied in subject, one of the most accomplished in technique, and with a style that is full of a charm, a humour, and a good nature that are evidently the character of the man himself'. He was born in Prague and made his way to England in the party of Lord Arundel arriving in London in late December 1636. For the upper right of the map Hollar etched a panorama of Dover Castle and upper left one of Rye. The latter is after a painting by the great seventeenth century court painter Sir Anthony van Dyck (22 March 1599 â" 9 December 1641). Pennington states that the original van Dyck painting was in the possession of Sir Bruce Ingram (1877-1963) editor of the Illustrated London News. It is now in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. The fourth state of eight included here erases the old date and replaces it with Stent's address and the date 1659, arguably the final version for the book. The map was of such significance in its day that it was often removed from the book, as originally here, particularly since it displayed the roads. To which is added a Catalogue of those Persons that have been from the first Institution Dignified with that Office. London: W. Godbid, 1661. Small 4to., (8 x 6 inches). A history of navigation beginning with Noah's Ark, and asking the question if the Ancients had anything like a compass with which to steer by. A list of Admirals from Edward I's time to Charles II is found at the end. Thomas Philipott "was a Kentish man; he published a small volume of Poems. The title-page reads" Poems "by Thomas Philipott, Master of Arts, some time of "Clare Hall, in Cambridge: printed by R. A. 1646." He was the son of John Philipott, Esq. Somerset Herald in James the First's reign, a very eminent and learned writer on heraldry, whose numerous MSS. are in the Herald's Office, London. I have seen three large volumes of his on Heraldry, relating wholly to Kent; and it is supposed, and it is probable, with respect to the Villare Cantianum, and his work on Heraldry (if they are not the same book), bearing Thomas Philipott's name, that they were made from papers of his father, who published nothing, that I am aware of, but the Lord Chancellors of the Kings of England, 4to. 163S, and several additions to the 4to. editions of Camden's Remains concerning Britain: London, 1637. With respect to Thomas, the son, he published, beside the Poems just now mentioned, Elegies to the Memory of William Glover, Esq. 1641,4to. and a Congratulatory Elegy, offered up to the Earl of Essex, upon the investiture with the dignity of Lord Chamberlain: and in prose, beside what have been mentioned, he published The Original and Growth of the Spanish Monarchy united with the House of Austria; 1664. 8vo.Antiquitas Theologica et Gentilis, and one or two other pieces. He died about the year 1684" (George Dyer, The Privileges of the University of Cambridge, 1824). R15276. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition. Folio (29 x 18.5cm). 'A substantial work. Despite it's haphazard arrangement, Philipot was clearly aiming at the sort of county history that Hasted eventually published. By the standards of the time it was a scholarly antiquarian study which was ambitious enough to attempt an appendix on the supposed etymology of Kentish place names.'- Currie & Lewis. pp. [xii],401. Without the 4pp. 'second table of addenda or omissions', which is frequently lacking, the prelims varying from copy to copy, presumably as a point of issue. With a large folding map (77 x 63cm) by Philip Symonson, neatly laid down on linen, the vignettes of Rye & Dover engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar, and four plates on the letterpress. Three prelim leaves & first two text leaves with very slight loss to outer-margins, nowhere near the text, map with a few small holes, but fairly unobtrusive and pretty much restricted to blank areas, occasional marks to the text, but a sound copy in contemporary calf, rebacked, gilt, new endpapers. With the signature to the title and engraved armorial bookplate of John Austen Esq, of Broadford, Kent, who was Jane Austen's great-grandfather. Vg.
