Harry August Jansen (October 3, 1883 - June 15, 1955), was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and settled in the United States. He traveled the world as a professional magician under the name Dante the Magician.

Thick Soft Cover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Original expedition postcard signed in pen by hand by each member of the expedition (not printed copies of the signatures). This was the South Indian Ocean Expedition To Heard Island. The team sailed in the small boat, the Patanela skippered by H. W. Tilman, to Heard Island, an antarctic volcanic island and one of the most remote places on earth with the objective of making the first ascent of the heavily glaciated highest peak, Mawson Peak on Big Ben (2745m). The team succeeded in making the ascent. The card has a b/w image of Big Ben and an inset b/w photo image of the Patanela on the illustrated side. There is an expedition cachet rubber stamp on the image side. On the address side there is one Australian postage stamp canceled 17 March 1965 in Sydney. It has a rubber stamp describing the stages of the voyage with dates, the expedition cachet rubber stamp mark, a Kerguelen dated cancel stamp, the printed names of the team members with the handsigned signature of each next to their respective printed name. The card has minor toning to the address side, sharp corners, strong signatures with no fading, no tears or loss. This expedition is described in H. W. Tilman's book, MOSTLY MISCHIEF and in Philip Temple's book, THE SEA AND THE SNOW. Very uncommon expedition card with scarce signature of H. W. Tilman. In 1987 Tilman perished without a trace along with all hands in the icy waters somewhere between Rio de Janiero and the Falkland Islands when their boat foundered. This is partially a reprint of Howard Thurston?s scarce 1929 memoir My Life of Magic, but also includes a previously unpublished manuscript by his daughter Jane Thurston Shepard, as well as a ?scrapbook? (articles, photos, etc.) contributed by Olson & Temple. Howard Thurston (1869-1936) was the most successful magician of his day. He began magic by learning card tricks, and called himself ?The King of Cards?, yet his stage performance was extensive, and at its height, he had eight train cars of equipment?the largest of any vaudeville magic act. His adopted daughter Jane provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into Thurston, with details not often seen when magicians write their own memoirs (which are usually at least partly self-promotion). Magic historian Phil Temple's "Dante: The Devil Himself" is based largely on Dante's personal records and Temple's friendship with surviving family members who had toured with the show decades earlier. Dante the Magician (a.k.a. Harry August Jansen) was the king in the golden age of big illusion shows. One of the most magnificent magic shows was the spectacular Sim Sala Bim, a extravaganza of magic, music and laughter. Printed b/w sketch of Dante and Moi-Yo Miller in Sim Sala Bim mounted on inside of front board. Sketch signed by Temple, Moi-Yo Miller Montes, Arturo Montes and Marion Trikosko. Moi-Yo Miller was the stage name of Mona Loretta Miller, an Australian who became the principal assistant to Dante. Miller became an integral part of Dante's show Sim Sala Bim. Marion S. Trikosko spent two years (1943-45) with Dante as his assistant. His book "Trouping with Dante," was published in 2006. Mounted below sketch is Temple's business card.
