(false title, title); XLIV (introduction); 402 pp. (including table); 4 tables hors texte (including 3 fold-outs); 1 engraved and colored plate; Volume II. 1 frontispiece; [2] ff. (false title, title); 464 pp. (including table); 1 engraved and colored plate; Volume III. 1 frontispiece; [2] ff. (false title, title); 488 pp. (including table); 5 out-of-text tables (including 3 fold-outs); 1 engraved and colored plate; Volume IV. 1 colored frontispiece; [2] ff. (false title, title); 178 pp. (including table); 1 fold-out table, 1 large fold-out map. (foxing). Blue percale decorated and titled on spine and first board, smooth spine, speckled edges. First edition of the text of this account of a voyage to California by Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars, known as Dupetit-Thouars (1793-1864), a French navigator, explorer and naval officer. This is one of the most important and complete accounts of the Mexican period. What's more, it is the first volume of a work that later expanded to include three other scientific studies: botany, zoology and the physical sciences, in 14 volumes of text and 4 volumes of atlas. This first edition is illustrated with 4 frontispieces (1 colored), 3 colored plates and a large fold-out world map. This voyage, intended to report on whaling in the Pacific, was of a political nature. The presence of the frigate Venus in ports around the world would be useful for French trade and diplomacy. After.

"The most important book on California during its Mexican regime." (Howes, P267). "This voyage, ostensibly to report on the whale fisheries in the Pacific, was actually primarily political in nature. The presence of the frigate Vénus in ports around the world would be of value to French commerce and diplomacy. After rounding Cape Horn, the expedition made calls up the coast of South America, to Hawaii, Kamchatka, and to California, in order to assist French traders who had been clamoring for support for some time. Du Petit-Thouars's account of his stay in California in 1837 is one of the most important and complete records of the Mexican period in California. In 1838m the Vénus made a run for Easter Island, further investigated the coast of South America, then sailed for the Galápagos and Marquesas Island, Tahiti, and New Zealand. At Tahiti the expedition forced Queen Pomaré to write a letter to the King of France apologizing for mistreatment of French priests, and, further, to pay an indemnity and to salute the French flag. Du Petit-Thouars had also made a treaty with Kamehameha III of Hawaii. After visits to Sydney and Mauritius, the ship sailed home, arriving after a voyage of thirty months. Abel du Petit-Thouars, nephew of the famed French botanist Louis du Petit-Thouars (1758-1831), is credited with bringing the Marquesas under French protection (1842), as well as the Society Islands (1843), and he was made a vice-admiral in 1846. This present set [as this copy] consists of the four volumes if the Relation and the Atlas pittoresque of this voyage, essentially the historical narrative. Another seven volumes of text and three more atlases, by other writers, were published later. These later volumes detailed the scientific observations of the voyage." (Hill, 518). These later volumes are extremely rare. Hill 518. Howes P267. Sabin 21354. Streeter 2495. HBS 65310. $30,000.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition of this major French Pacific voyage, "noted for its magnificent panoramic views of ports and anchorages" (Forbes) and "one of the most important and complete records of the Mexican period in California" (Hill). This set is distinguished by two rare signed original watercolours by Theodore-Romuald-Georges Mesnard, one of the expedition's two artist-officers, both painted on the spot in Kamchatka. Mesnard (1814-1844), from a naval family in Cherbourg, embarked on the Vénus in 1836 as a midshipman under Abel du Petit-Thouars. Though unofficial as an illustrator, he was one of the two junior officers whose drawings formed the basis of the lithographs in the 1841 Atlas pittoresque. His work depicted Indigenous peoples, their dwellings and customs, European settlements such as Kororareka, and extensive coastal profiles. Du Petit-Thouars returned to France with the Vénus in 1839, probably with Mesnard aboard. Mesnard later returned to the Pacific and was killed in a duel in Tahiti in 1844 at the age of 29. Original artwork by Mesnard is extraordinarily scarce. In 1994 Minson noted a single watercolour at the National Library of New Zealand as the only known example. A small cache surfaced at auction in the mid-1990s, including a group of 16 sold at Rouillac-Vendôme in 1993 (misattributed and realising £22,230) and a view of Acapulco sold at Christie's in 1994 for £3,000. No further originals have appeared since. The confusion over his name stems from his tightly interlaced monogram, long mistaken for an "F". Mesnard's artistic zeal was evidently valued by his commander. The two present watercolours, both Kamchatka views, were clearly executed from the deck of the Vénus, the first French ship to visit the region since La Pérouse in 1786. Each is tipped to a stub overlaying the corresponding lithograph in the Atlas pittoresque ("Basse des Trois-Frères baie d'Avatscha" and "Vue de Petropawlowski"), retains bright colouring, and, despite amateur handling, conveys a vivid sense of place. Inked plate numbers and pencilled captions survive. As usual, the published lithographs by Sabatier and Lassalle tidy Mesnard's originals, heightening the Romantic atmosphere; Sabatier in particular darkens the sky to suggest remoteness and mystery. Mesnard's originals, by contrast, resemble a clear day off Normandy. The famed "Trois-Frères" islets remain a celebrated photographic destination. Petropavlovsk, on Avacha Bay, appears here as a small settlement clustered around the church of Saints Peter and Paul, overshadowed by Koryaksky volcano. The voyage aimed to assert French power in the Pacific while conducting extensive scientific work. Du Petit-Thouars produced accurate charts of poorly surveyed harbours, including Valparaiso, Callao, Honolulu, Avacha Bay, Magdalena Bay, Acapulco, the Galápagos, and the Bay of Islands. After Kamchatka the Vénus sailed to the California coast, Mazatlán, Acapulco, Chile, Peru, the Galápagos, Easter Island, New Zealand, Sydney, and Tahiti, returning to France via the Cape of Good Hope on 24 June 1839 (Forbes). Forbes describes the Atlas zoologique as "a major scientific publication" with plates of exceptional quality, and the Atlas hydrographique as "magnificent, and very rare", its maps accompanied by striking profile views. The later text volumes Zoologique (1855) and Botanique (1864) are not present here and are seldom found with sets. Even the Hill Collection owned only the four volumes of the Relation and the Atlas pittoresque. This is therefore an unusually complete and highly desirable set, further distinguished by Mesnard's remarkable and exceptionally rare Kamchatka watercolours. Roger Collins, New Zealand Seen by the French: 1769-1846, Wellington, National Library of New Zealand, 2009; Hill 518; Forbes 1198, 1333, 1526, 1586, 1588; Howes P267; Howgego, II D38; McDonnell, The Hawaii Hundred, 56; Marion Minson, "Early French Views of the Antipodes: Two recent additions to the Alexander Turnbull Library's Drawings and Prints Collection", Stout Centre Review, June 1994; Nissen, BBI 561; Nissen, IVB 281; Sabin 21354 ("this fine work"); Zimmer, p. 490. 9 text vols, octavo (240 x 146 mm); 3 atlas folio vols of plates and maps. Atlas pittoresque: folding map of the world with route of the expedition, 68 lithographic plates, including a plan of Sydney, and 50 lithographs of costumes and customs on china paper with contemporary hand-colouring; Atlas hydrographique: engraved title and 19 maps on 16 sheets, 6 double-page; Atlas zoologique & botanique: 77 engraved plates (of 79, lacking plates 7 and 8 of fish), 70 of them hand-coloured, of mammals, birds, fish, shells, etc., 28 line-engraved botanical plates; all folding letterpress tables present in text vols. Finely and uniformly rebound to style in dark blue quarter calf by Atelier Laurenchet, decorative gilt smooth spines incorporating gilt block of a three-masted ship in full sail, Italian pattern marbled sides. Half-title to first text vol. torn and repaired, zoological and botanical plates professionally cleaned (except for the bird section which is browned and the paper a little brittle), tidemark to top right corner of most of the views in the Atlas pittoresque, touching the image on around a dozen but not affecting the costume plates. A most handsome set.
