Pétion practiced law until his election to the Estates General, where he gained prominence by fighting for the Declaration of the Rights of Man and for increasing the powers of the National Assembly. As a member of the Constitutional Committee of 1790-91, he advocated abolition of religious orders, establishment of the assignats, and complete judicial reform. He also demanded that the legislature receive sole authority to declare war or negociate peace. Pétion was immensly popular and shared with Robespierre the epithet 'Incorruptible.' The Discours was held on 27 March, 1790.
