"The Dutch in the seventeenth century placed a premium on naturalistic accounts of their surroundings, be they in the form of portraits, landscapes, still lifes, or scenes of everyday life -- what we have come to call 'genre' painting. With this art, the painter recorded the look, the manners, the character of those quotidian events, which comprise day-to-day existence." (p. xiii) This book features essays on both the artists and on life and culture during this time. The catalogue addresses 127 paintings: first, in color plates, and secondly, with lengthy annotations and small BW illus. The concluding bibliography is substantial. A terrific resource. VG-, some mild wear to extremities, crease in spine.

"Just as e-mail now dominates written communication, in the 17th century, the writing of personal letters became widespread and fashionable. Although letters had long existed, the notion that they could convey private feelings and emotions suddenly captured the popular imagination and transformed personal communication. During this period, not only was Holland the most literate country in Europe and a leading publishing center, but it was also the focus of an explosion of epistolary activity. In turn, the 17th-c. Dutch genre painters became the first to deict anonymous people writing, reading, dispatching and receiving letters. The catalogue is the first comprehensive study of the subject and relates the depiction of letter themes to the culture, lliterature, and social history of the Netherlands as well as such practical developments as the spread of the Dutch postal system." With 3 main essays, a list of artists, and the catalogue. Truly a fascinating subject and catalogue! Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . One review noted: "This thoroughly interdisciplinary collection of essays explores the multi-faceted relationship between international politics, diplomacy and the visual arts that developed during the early seventeenth century. Several chapters provide major re-evaluations of the career of Peter Paul Rubens as an artistdiplomat, based on previously neglected manuscript sources and a deepened analysis of the social and political environments in which he operated. Other contributors focus on Rubens's contemporary court artists, such as Anthony van Dyck, Guido Reni and Diego Velázquez. In addition to providing original interpretations of several important paintings and painting cycles, the volume examines such topics as the evolution of personified images of nationality, representations of dynastic marriages, the material culture of royal bridal trousseaus, the importance of details of costume and colour to the visual codes of baroque courts, and the roles played by artists within court societies. Ranging across Western Europe, from England to the Low Countries, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, these essays demonstrate conclusively the subtlety and complexity of visual communication within early baroque court societies, which enabled artists to convey complex political messages through paintings. The contributors to this volume display a variety of methodological approaches, demonstrating many different ways in which historical research can be fruitfully integrated with art historical analysis to generate new insights into both the visual culture and the politics of baroque Europe.".

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. RECLAIMED PAINTINGS FROM THE COLLECTION OF JACQUES GOUDSTIKKER 2008 LARGE HC DJ. Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: Jacques Goudstikker (1897-1940) a Jewish Dutch art dealer took over his father s gallery in 1919 and quickly made his presence felt-introducing a more international thrust to the gallery and demonstrating a keen business acumen Goudstikker became one of the most successful art dealers and tastemakers in Amsterdam between the wars.Tragically Goudstikker died in flight from the Nazis in 1940 and his enormous collection of art including approximately 1400 paintings was looted by Reichsmarschall Hermann Goring. In 2009 a portion of this looted art was restored to Goudstikker s heirs by the Dutch government. Featuring some two hundred color illustrations this book examines Goudstikker s legacy-reveals the dramatic story of the looting of his collection and discusses the legal efforts that finally brought its restitution. I am very pleased to offer then: Reclaimed-Paintings from the Collection of Jacques Goudstikker by Peter C. Sutton et al. This rather large hard cover book (9 ¾ x 12 ¼ inches 268 pages) was published by the Yale University Press in association with the Bruce Museum of Greenwich Connecticut and the Jewish Museum of New York dated 2008. It is the catalogue for the exhibition of the same name held at the Bruce Museum. This is a remarkable book about a remarkable story of which we have all heard something about; here you can best understand this tragedy. Condition: This book is in near fine condition virtually without signs of wear or blemish. The only mark I found in the book is the former owner s embossed logo on the front endpaper. There is some very faint edge wear to the spine tips of the dust jacket. It is not ex-library or a remainder.
