Clevier was persecuted and the book suppressed so that early copies are extremely rare. Its publisher, Jean Morin was himself arrested and subjected to interrogation. As for Des Perriers, he went into hiding and committed suicide,(says Henri Estienne.) Better written than most of the books of his time, its importance lies in the satirical allegories of Des Perriers, its irony, its duplicity in language, heresies and condemnable impiety.
