From the Preface: The author was born in 1729, attended Christ Church College and was appointed to several small parishes in Northampton. "Percy's contribution to English letters was important to the expanding literary climate of 18th century England. He published numerous translations, including a Chinese novel & Celtic & Nordic prose. Historically, his most famous work was a collection of 16th century anonymous poems, which he compiled and edited from an ancient manuscript found beneath a cabinet in the home of Humphrey Pitt dating from about 1660". Contents include: Walking in a Meadowe Greene; Off a Puritane; A Maid and a Younge Man; I Dreamed My Love; etc.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. Engravings Ilustrador. 1st Edition. Three volumes; Small 8vo; 344, 384, 350 pages plus blank leaves, prelims, music leaf, an advertisement, and leaf of binder's directions. In a worn contemporary binding of blue-green pastepaper boards, and rather poor older rebacking of tan leather. The hinges are cracked and four boards detached. But the three volumes are all untrimmed! And housed in nice tan linen covered slipcase. Illus. with a finely engraved frontispiece to volume one, title page and chapter vignettes. Thomas Percy (13 April 1729 - 30 September 1811) was Bishop of Dromore, County Down, Ireland. Before being made bishop, he was chaplain to George III of the United Kingdom. Percy's greatest contribution is considered to be his Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765), the first of the great ballad collections, which was the one work most responsible for the ballad revival in English poetry that was a significant part of the Romantic movement. All three volumes have the early festooned crest book label of John Baverstock, over pasted in two vols with the heraldic plate of Thomas Merriman. Vol. two has a library mark (N138) and a fine signature of Baverstock at the top of the pastedown endpaper. The free endpaper of vol one has a finely penned 15 line work titled 'sonnet'. The scarce first edition - an untrimmed copy with all its prelims and the two half title leaves present.
