Pepler helped to organize an exhibition of GillÕs works at the Newberry Library in February, 1949. This letter was intended to be read at the exhibition, but was dropped from the program. ÒBecause of the historical significance of Mr. PeplerÕs letter, which reveals many unknown incidents, including some which concern the beginnings of GillÕs interest in wood engraving, it was decided to publish the letter as an STA keepsakeÓ (foreword).
