This book provides guidance to the State Historic Preservation Review Boards which are fundamental components of State historic preservation programs nationwide. The author provides a comprehensive definition of historic preservation, discussing its origins in the United States and its subsequent evolution into a multifaceted and systematic undertaking. The text defines the four primary activities of a Review Board: reviewing National Register nominations, reviewing appropriate documentation submitted in conjunction with the Historic Preservation Fund, providing general advice and professional recommendations to the State Historic Preservation Officer, and performing such duties as may be appropriate. The author also discusses the Comprehensive Statewide Historic Preservation Plan, providing guidance on how the State Historic Preservation Office can bring historic preservation concerns to the broader land-use planning throughout the State, and the role of the Review Board in this process. The publication serves as a valuable resource for State Historic Preservation Review Board members, providing them with the information and guidance needed to make meaningful contributions to the preservation of their State's historic resources.
