Kaiserin Joséphine gab ihm dort den Auftrag zu einem zwölfteiligen Zyklus von großformatigen Landschafts-Aquarellen. Ab 1812 hielt sich Frommel in Italien auf. Bis 1817 lebte er in Rom, wo er sich im Umfeld der Nazarener bewegte.
