Première et seule édition, rare. Cet ouvrage fut rédigé au moment de l'expédition dEgypte, pays où l'affection était endémique. Papon y retrace l'histoire de la peste depuis celle qui frappa Athènes (l'an 331 avant J.C.) jusqu'à celle de Marseille en 1720. Il rapporte de nombreux détails sur les pestes d'Athénes, Constantinople, Milan, Lyon, Montpellier, Digne, Toulon, Marseille et Aix-en-Provence. La deuxième partie est consacrée aux précautions sanitaires à prendre dans les villes, les ports, ; des chapitres sont consacrés aux quarantaines, au lazaret, On trouve à la fin un index chronologique des épidémies de peste. Cet ouvrage fut très bien accueilli et reçu les éloges de Guyton de Morveau, pionnier de l'hygiène. Papon (1734-1803) fit partie de la congrégation de l'Oratoire et fut nommé conservateur de la bibliothèque de Marseille. Il se fixa ensuite à Paris pour se consacrer à des recherches historiques. Il fut membre associé de l'Institut. Les parents évitaient de se voir ; les amis se fuyaient, le voisin craignait de recevoir de son voisin un trait contagieux, et lui inspirait les mêmes craintes : ainsi, on s'enferma parce que tout devint suspect et dangereux. La peste enlevait souvent toute une famille et frappait des rues entières où d'un bout à l'autre il ne restait pas une maison saine'. He reminded his readers that 'in other times, the same foyer of corruption which fosters the plague in Egypt and Ethiopia was in France and Italy: enlightened thinkers destroyed it.' Such a thing, Papon insisted was possible in the East too: 'I would like to believe that Cairo and Constantinople might become one day just as healthy as Paris and London'. The contagionist J.P.
