Ciò nonostante, i ferrovieri si sono sempre ritenuti una «grande famiglia», condividendo compatti le battaglie per l'emancipazione operaia, per il miglioramento delle condizioni lavorative, per la riforma dell'azienda. I dirigenti sindacali hanno comunque dovuto svolgere una costante opera di mediazione tra le scelte generali e le spinte rivendicative provenienti dai singoli mestieri, utilizzando l'ideologia come elemento aggregante per vincere un latente «corporativismo». Fin dagli ultimi anni dell'Ottocento, i ferrovieri hanno rappresentato una delle categorie più politicizzate, sebbene tale connotazione non abbia mai portato le loro organizzazioni a dipendere dai partiti, ma abbia al contrario significato la continua ricerca di un'azione indipendente. Nei saggi contenuti all'interno del volume vengono ricostruite, in successione cronologica, le vicende sindacali in ferrovia, passando attraverso avvenimenti cruciali come la repressione fascista, la Resistenza e la rapida ricostituzione del sindacato negli anni '40, la politica ostile ai lavoratori dei governi centristi e la conquista dello stato giuridico negli anni '50, la nascita del sindacalismo autonomo e il rinnovamento organizzativo negli anni '60, il cammino verso la costruzione di federazioni tra i lavoratori dei trasporti negli anni '70, con il tentativo di superare i tradizionali sindacati di categoria.
