The double aim, set out in the introduction, is both to give pleasure through the juxtaposition of memorable (and sometimes unfamiliar) verse and pictures, and to show how closely the poets and painters of the age responded to the same themes: night and nightmare, storm-lashed coasts, ruined abbeys, moonlight, the Lakes, the Alps, and the Italian landscape.
