Journal of poetry and illustration published by students at Staten Island's Wagner College, following a year of on-campus protest and liberation struggles begun in 1969 and held over into 1971, advocating for the eight Black Panthers on trial in New Haven, Connecticut for the murder of former panther, Alex Rackley. In April of 1970, 90 African-American and Puerto-Rican students at Wagner took over and occupied administration buildings on campus, demanding the creation of both Black and Puerto Rican studies programs (Rogers : 301). Umoja features illustrations and writing that well-represent the tenor of this activism and campus protest movement that influenced the creation of this journal.
