Bryanston Square, London, June 16, 80. To Mrs. Johnson [in its entirety] "I went the day before yesterday to see your picture at Reeves' Shop. What he proposes to do to it would Improve it immensely, and would not in any way harm it. He mentioned to me what the cost was to be (3 pound symbol) and I think it very reasonable. In its present state it is unsightly but would be quite another picture when restored.".

Ouless regrets that he has 'nothing available' for 'the Aberdeen Exhibition this year', 'unless it be Marks' portrait [Henry Stacy Marks, artist] which is my property & now at Manchester, but as it was painted 12 years ago I do not think you will consider it suitable'. He suggest asking the Highland Railway Company whether they might lend the 'half length by me of Sir A. Matheson'. The letter ends: 'I wish I had something more recent which I could propose. I hope another year you will ask me again.'.

In this letter, British portrait painter Walter William Ouless informs his friend Aquer of his plans to leave London, and requests to see the addressee if they can. Ouless entered the Royal Academy schools in 1865, becoming a full member in 1881. After establishing a successful career in portrait painting, Ouless later turned to landscapes. A bifolium. Externally, smart, with some light bumping to the extremities. Lightly aged. Very Good. signed by author. book.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
