"The English Linguistic society of Japan, which was founded and held its first General Meeting in 1983, celebrated its tenth anniversary in November 1992. To commemorate the special occasion, the Society invited two eminent scholars from abroad as guest speakers to actively participate in special workshops and give talks in a plenary session in its Tenth General Meeting held on 7 and 8 November 1992 at Tokyo University of Foerign Studies. The invited guests were Professor Luigi Rizzi of the University of Geneva and Professor Steven Pinker of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The special workshops were organised to discuss two problems which reflect important concerns in our field. 'Syntax of psych-predicates and other predicates without external argument' and 'The acquisition of argument structure'. . The two topics, though independent of each other, were yet threaded by the same theme 'argument structure'. Hence it has been deemed justifiable to collect the papers and comments presented in the two workshops in one form. The present volume is an edited collection." Book has very minor bumping to corners of front and back covers and top of spine. Otherwise in excellent condition. No inscriptions. All contents are tight and clean.
