Brossura. Condición: nuovo. 20pp. Estratto da "ORIENTALIA CHRISTIANA PERIODICA" 75 (2009). Punto metallico -- This study presents the significant data regarding the book Gadla abuna Üarâ Dengel, edited by the Patriarchate of the Orthodox Tawâüdo Church of Ethiopia and published at Addis Ababa in 2004/5. The monk priest Üarâ Dengal was born during the reign of Claude (1540-1559) and lived until the time of King Fâsilada (1632-1667), a significant period in the history of Ethiopia first of all because of the invasion of the Muslim Ahmed ibn Ibrahim that devastated the country (1523-1543), persecuting Christians and destroying churches; and secondly, because of the mission of the Jesuits, which led to the conversion of King Susenyos (1607-1632) to Catholicism. With the arrival of these European priests there began in Ethiopia sharp controversies between the Alexandrian and Catholic faiths, accompanied by violent reactions against the missionaries' attempts at Latinization. The Orthodox Tawâüdo Church of Ethiopia has canonized Üarâ Dengel for his heroic virtue, the miracles he performed, and the persecution he underwent for refusing to accept to the Roman faith. In addition to providing valuable references to persons and historical events, the Life of the saint describes at length monastic usages, especially the prayers, food and drink, and vesture of the monks. This article summarizes the Life and miracles of the saint, includes translations of parts of the Ge'ez text, and provides a translation of Üarâ Dengel's "Effigy" hymn in its entirety.…

Brossura. Condición: nuovo. 27pp. Estratto da "ORIENTALIA CHRISTIANA PERIODICA" 76 (2010). Punto metallico --- The English traveller Herbert Weld Blundel (1852-1953) visited East Africa and Ethiopia in 1898, where he discovered that the Nile had been inaccurately located on the maps, and gathered hundreds of samples of indigenous birds that he donated to the British Museum. In Ethiopia again in 1905, he drew new maps, and studied the political system of the Oromo and the customs of the Berta population. On his return home he continued his studies of Ethiopica, some of which he published. His principal work was a Ge'ez edition with English translation of The Royal Chronicle of Abyssinia 1769-1840, which appeared in London in 1922. The present article publishes the "Index of Proper Names and Biblical Citations," absent in the original edition of Blundel.…

Brossura. Condición: nuovo. 65pp. Estratto da "ORIENTALIA CHRISTIANA PERIODICA" 80 (2014) --- This author wishes to introduce to his readership a specific Ethiopic manuscript "Raineri 251", which is conserved by the Vatican Apostolic Library. After a brief description of the manuscript, the author of this article identifies the author of the text contained in the manuscript, a text which is entitled The Book of Light. Significant sections of this text are translated into Italian and a summary of the sections which are not translated is added. Giyorgis of Saglâ or of Gâse©©â (around 1366-1425), known as the "Candelabra of Ethiopia," was one of the most prolific authors of sacred texts in Geez. The Book of Light, which is also included in other manuscripts, has not yet been published. The Life of Giyorgis has, on the other hand, already been published (CSCO 492-493), as well other works (e.g. CSCO 515-516, 532-533) of this author. The Book of Light is also known as the Book of the Hours and sets forth, in the guise of the canonical hours, the praises of and prayers of intercession to Jesus contemplated in the diverse mysteries of his life, as well as praises and prayers of and to the Holy Trinity, the Virgin Mary, the angels, and the apostles.…
