An original boudoir albumen photograph capturing the tragic crash of the Oregon Central & Eastern Railroads train on the Yaquina Line at Tunnel No. 1 resulting in the deaths of Conductor Campbell, with inset portrait upper left, and Brakeman Wilcox lower right. Founded originally in the 1870's by T. Egerton Hogg as a railroad line from Yaquina Bay through Corvallis and up the Santiam River to the base of the Cascades, the company defaulted in 1894, and was sold to Montana lumber baron Andrew Hammond for $ 100,000 who largely used the rail line for his Curtiss Lumber Company in Mill City. Half the locomotives were barely in operating condition, and the line was badly in need of repairs. Crawford (1850-1929) and his brother Orville produced stereoviews and boudoir cards of scenes from the Pacific Coast through the Columbia River Gorge, up to the summit of Mount Hood, chiefly based in the Albany area, and Paxton (1833-1902) was his partner off-and-on in the photo studio from 1887 until his death in partnership.
