From the blurb - "In the 1860s a new and devastating invader from the New World was detected in Europe: 'the unknown disease', as it was called at first - phylloxera. It took over vineyards, attacked the vines, and more particularly almost ruined the world's largest wine industry, that of France. In terms of wealth, the destruction of the vines and the experimental measures taken to eradicate the pest were as costly as the losses suffered by the French in the Franco-Prussian War. The drama and the tragedy, lasting more than a generation, was not merely financial: the human suffering, in terms of livelihoods wiped out, was immense. The main theme of the author's story, thus illumined against its social and economic background, is the pest's destruction of the vines and the remedy which eventually restored Europe's wine industry. It was done by the application of science and good sense, which unravelled a complex problem without the benefit of modern science, though not without a continuing battle against prejudice, ignorance and stupidity.
