Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. A superbly preserved illustrated edition of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's canonical 18th-century comedy, published by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. as a quality literary edition exemplifying early 20th-century American commitment to fine printing and artistic presentation. This 1907…edition features an authoritative introduction by Brander Matthews, the foremost American drama scholar of the era and Professor of Dramatic Literature at Columbia University, providing scholarly context for this enduring comedic masterpiece. The Rivals, first performed at Covent Garden in 1775, remains one of the most celebrated comedies in the English language. Sheridan (1751-1816) dominated late 18th-century theatre; the play continues as a staple of English literature curricula and active theatrical repertories worldwide, celebrated for its wit, memorable characters (Mrs. Malaprop, Sir Anthony Absolute, Bob Acres, Lydia Languish), sophisticated plot, and timeless charm. This edition presents the play as a literary and artistic object worthy of serious study and aesthetic appreciation. Illustrated by M. Power O'Malley with striking color frontispiece and seventeen black-and-white engravings capturing Georgian elegance and period costumes. Composition and electrotype plates executed by D.B. Updike of The Merrymount Press, Boston—America's most prestigious fine printing operation, recognized for exceptional typography and superior material quality. Binding design reflects Arts and Crafts aesthetics with elaborate gilt botanical motifs framing central medallion. Original publisher's cloth in vibrant deep olive-green with bright gilt decoration throughout; gilt edges preserved and luminous. Cloth remains remarkably vibrant with minimal fading; corners sharp, boards flat and square, binding tight and structurally sound. Pages cream-colored, exceptionally clean and bright with minimal age-toning. No foxing or staining. Text crisp and fully legible; color frontispiece vivid; all engravings sharp and detailed. Early ownership inscription on endpaper adds historical charm. Complete and secure throughout. Condition: Very Good to Very Good Plus. An exceptionally well-preserved copy suitable for serious study and collection. O'Malley, M. Power (ilustrador).

Margaret Neilson Armstrong (1867-1944) was a 19th and early 20th century American book cover designer, illustrator, and author. She is best known for her book covers influenced by Art Nouveau. She also wrote and illustrated the first comprehensive guide to wildflowers of the American west, Field Book of Western Wild Flowers (1915). She began her career as a book cover designer in the late 1880s, initially doing commissions for Charles Scribner's Sons and A.C. McClurg and later for other publishers as well. She designed more than 314 book covers and book bindings, about half of which were for Scribner's. Her later work was influenced by Art Nouveau and favored plant-related motifs, bold colors, gold stamping, and often slightly asymmetrical designs in compositions that often seemed to be moving while standing still. Beginning in 1895, Armstrong began leaving her monogram on most of her covers; it is a simple "MA" in upper case with the "M" slightly overlapping the "A". Armstrong's designs were so successful, sometimes publishers would hire artists specifically to imitate her look. COLI1907BBCB - 03/26 - HK3485. M. Power O'Malley, Margaret Armstrong (ilustrador).
