Scholarly essays examine the cultural landscape of late Victorian America, tracing how industrial wealth shaped public museum access, connoisseurship and civic identity in the post-Civil War era. Fine art plates reproduce American Realist, British Academic and European Barbizon works, with color reproductions, black-and-white plates, decorative arts photography and architectural drawings. Presswork is by Burton and Mayer of Milwaukee. Archival floor plans and structural elevations illustrate George Ashdown Audsley's original gallery building, giving a multi-disciplinary visual record of Gilded Age design.
