Añadir al carrito18 x 14cm. Paperback, unpaginated [112pp]. A graphic novel presenting the history of spiritualism, published as part of Book Works' 'Singular Sociology' series, edited by Nav Haq. The foreword is credited to Andrew Jackson Davis, via the spirit medium Gladys Carr. From the rear cover: "On the night of 31 March 1848, the peace was shattered by a bizarre incident occurring at the home of the Fox Family, in the rural community of Hydesville in New York State. Kate and Maggie, two seemingly innocent young sisters poised on the threshold of adulthood, had pushed aside the veil between the two worlds and unleashed the spirits of the dead. History is still divided as to whether they were frauds or visionaries, but their 'new science of spirit communication' sparked a remarkable social movement dedicated to female suffrage, free love, universal education and the abolition of slavery that reached all the way to the British Isles. This thrilling tale introduces a host of characters, from mediums to mesmerists, scientists and social reformers including Emanuel Swedenborg, Andrew Jackson Davis, Victoria Woodhull, Amy Post, John Murray Spear, Florence Cook and Robert Owen who, as part of the Modern Spiritualist Movement, attempted to literally turn the world upside down." Very good condition.

New York''s Hometown Newspaper was printed in an edition of 1,000 on the first anniversary of 9-11, to reclaim my birthday on the same day The newspaper contains articles, poems, drawings, ads, and all sorts of stupid beautiful shit solicited from over 100 physical artist friends and univocally accepted under the open editorial policy as birthday gifts. The back I BOMB NY logo is by the Bernadette Corporation. Looking back though, it is interesting how certain mainstream politicians have taken all our avant-garde strategies, DADA, Punk, Fiction, Surrealism, Performance, Wigs, even FAKE NEWS (homage: Yves Klein), squeezed the dear soul out of them, and weaponized them for their delinquent purposes. If that is really the case of our times, then what is the role of an artist today? Discuss." -- Artist's statement Very Good / Fine. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Fine. First Edition. Wraps. Small 8vo. pp 29. Original publisher's white wraps, lettered black on front cover. One of 2000 copies only. Illustrated throughout by Olivia Plender. "In 2011 I was invited to make an artwork for the Folkestone Triennial, held in a former port town popular in the nineteenth century. At that time holiday makers could imagine themselves being abroad in some colonial destination as they frequented Folkestone's Palm Court, Rhodesia Hotel and Luxor Arcade. The version of the town that I visited in 2011 was economically depressed and attempting 'regeneration', however, traces of the now repressed orientalist fantasy to which it once catered could still be found. For example, by paying attention to place names, facades, an abundance of New Age shops selling 'exotic' spiritual knick-knacks, the mediums who regularly tour Britain's coast line and its Masonic Hall, where my art work was installed . The installation was accompanied by a tract printed on the occasion of the exhibition, in which Andrew Jackson Davis recounts his travels in this world and the next. He made his first appearance in my work, as narrator of the graphic novel A Stellar Key to the Summerland (2007)." Rare 2 copies only at WorldCat - at the BL and Tate Gallery. About fine.
