Her family s…pent their summers in Scotland, the setting of her books, and they were there in 1939 when her father, a naval officer, decided that they should remain in Inverewe for the duration of the Second World War. Steer by the Stars was first published in 1944 and is the sequel to Orders to Poach, Olivia Fitzroy's first novel. In this story the Stewarts have returned to Carrick lodge on the west coast of Scotland for another summer holiday, and this time they have a boat of their own, the Fauna. The book is bound in paperback form with an illustration on the front cover. It is in excellent condition and the contents are secure and clean with no inscription. Anne Bullen (ilustrador).

Olivia Fitzroy (or Fitz Roy) (1921-1969) was a Br…itish author of children's books. Her family spent their summers in Scotland, the setting of her books, and they were there in 1939 when her father, a naval officer, decided that they should remain in Inverewe for the duration of the Second World War. "Jamie and Jean Stewart are convalescing after measles at Carrick on the west coast of Scotland. Their housekeeper, Maggie, is looking after them, but they are depressed because their family and friends are away and they can find nothing interesting to do. But one day a friend, Fergus, does arrive, and persuades Maggie to let him take them to his island in his fishing boat, the Wandering Star. They are delighted to learn that they are to act as crew for the voyage, and that Fergus's Island of Birds is forty miles beyond the Outer Hebrides. They enjoy exploring the island with its deserted village, keeping house in the cottage Fergus has rebuilt for himself, fishing and watching birds, including a pair of rare sea-eagles which have nested on the cliffs. An unexpected interruption of their happiness is the arrival of two shady characters who pretend to Jean, whom they find alone in the cottage, that they are friends of Fergus's. Inadvertently she gives away the secret of the sea-eagles' nest. From then on Fergus and the children are defenders in a battle to protect the valuable eggs from the two would-be thieves. The Island of Birds proves to be an even more exciting place than Jean and James had bargained for." The book is bound in the original green boards with red-brown titling on the spine and an illustration of an eagle on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and a faint water stain near the spine edge of part of the top edge of the front board . The contents are tight and clean with a light water stain extending out to about 1 1/2" from the spine corner on the top edge of the front fixed and free endpapers and slight offsetting to the endpapers. An inscription dated 1964 has been written on the dedication page. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear sith light soiling and the spine is slightly faded. The spine ends and corners are lightly bumped and nicked and there is some rubbing down the front fore edge and front spine edge. There is a water stain at the top of the spine that extends to a diminishing extend along the top of the wrapper, but the stain is only really visible on the back and the reverse. The front flap has not been clipped although there is a later publisher's price sticker over the original printed price. Overall, this is a very good tight and clean copy of a scarce title. The page edges are a little browned. Light browning to the endpapers with a… little spotting down the rear free endpaper. No other marks on the pages. The jacket has chipping to the corners and at the top and bottom of the spine which also has some quite heavy edge rubbing. The front panel has a stain over the first part of the author's name. The rear panel has a two small closed tears in the top edge and quite a bit of surface browning. The jacket reverse is also quite heavily browned. The boards have a little darkening to the spine, light bumping to the corners and the colouring on the front and rear panels is slightly uneven. The page edges are a little browned with dark spotting on the top edges and scattered dark spots to the… fore edges. A few light spots to the endpapers with a number in pen to the top right corner of the front free endpaperand a small pen mark to the bottom right corner of the rear pastedown. There are a few brown spots here and there through the book but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. The jacket has a darkened spine and brown spotting to the front and rear panels and the front flap. The front flap has a one inch closed tear to the top edge and a half inch closed tear to the bottom edge. Previous owner's name in pen to the top of the front flap.
