Ohman Colton. 1898. *** An original chromolithograph map of the areas of U.S. Navy, Marines, and Army operations in the Caribbean during the Spanish-American War of 1898 (dated in plate). The main map depicts Cuba with its six provinces in colors. In addition there are three (3) inset maps - Porto Rico [sic]; entire Caribbean; Havana and vicinity. Cuba is depicted with a number of small circles that indicate where battles took place. This map appeared in the Navy Edition of the Scientific American Supplement, No. 1165. *** Clear, clean image with faint offsetting, bright colors. Several folds as issued, reinforced on blank verso with archival tape. Two small stains in bottom corners just cross outer neat lines. *** Sheet is 15.25 inches high by 16.75 inches. The image, including the large title, is approx. 14 inches high by 15.75 inches.

This is a rare map from the successor to the Colton map publishing company. The Colton family began publishing maps in 1833. The company's business was narrowed largely to publishing maps of the New York area by the early 1890's. Colton merged with Ohman in or around 1896. Their last recorded publication was in 1901. This map contains a note, printed in red, indicating that it was "intended for the use of Sportsmen, Whellmen and Driving Parties." The western part of Ulster County is in the heart of the Catskill Mountains.

It was produced during the Spanish-American War and was distributed to help readers understand the geography of the conflict. A Closer Look Cuba is displayed divided into its provinces, which are color-shaded for easy distinction. Major cities and junctions are circled and shaded differently than their surrounding province for contrast. Railways are noted in detail, including a military railroad running north-south in the center of the island (Trocha de Júcaro a Morón), along with roads, rivers, mountains, and the dividing lines between dioceses. Florida, the Bahamas, and other surrounding islands and features are depicted. Three insets appear: one each focusing on Puerto Rico and Havana, with the inset third inset at top-right providing a more expansive view of the Caribbean. The Spanish-American War The Spanish-American War was fought between Spain and the United States from April 21, 1898, to August 13, 1898. The war started after the USS Maine suffered a massive explosion and sank in Havana Harbor. Tensions had been rising between the two countries for some time, with the U.S. showing support for Cuban independence while Spain claimed Cuba to be a province of Spain. The U.S. forces quickly outgunned and outnumbered the Spanish, who surrendered after minimal conflict. After the fighting ended, the U.S. received the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico along with Cuba as a U.S. protectorate. Publication History and Census This map appeared in the Scientific American Navy Supplement No. 1165 in 1898. It was produced by Colton, Ohman, and Co., a descendant of the firm founded by the great 19th-century map publisher Joseph Hutchins Colton.
