Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Air War: Burma, 1941-45The R.A.F., U.S.A.A.F. & R.I.A.F. during the Campaign against the Japanese, Wings of the Phoenix and The Royal Indian Air Force at WarTwo accounts of the Allied Air Forces in the Far East during the Second World WarThis is an outstanding book concerning the air war during the Burma, Arakan and North East India campaign. Japanese aerial dominance in 1942 was a major factor in the early Allied setbacks. The Allies were heavily outnumbered in the air and reliant on obsolete aircraft. However, the arrival of newly developed aircraft in late 1943 finally enabled Allied pilots to out perform their Japanese opponents. However, this war fought over savage terrain and subject to extreme weather conditions which were perpetually difficult for air and ground crews alike. The fundamental and virtually unique contribution to Allied victory was the airborne logistical lifeline for ground forces. During the Battle of the Admin Box, an isolated division was sustained by air, whilst at Imphal and Kohima, when the Japanese severed conventional resupply, the Allie crews daily flew in hundreds of tons of materiel. The legendary Dakota among other aircraft-large and small- were used to rapidly airlift men into battle and remove casualties. This Leonaur edition contains two perspectives of the campaign fought by the British, Commonwealth, Indian and American services, Includes riveting first-hand accounts. This republication has been made possible by the release into the public domain of officially produced publications and will be essential reading for every student of the period. Liberally illustrated with maps and photographs.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket. Añadir al carritoLeather Bound. Condición: Poor. No Jacket. Official sources Ilustrador. 1st Edition. The American Conflict 1860-'65 by Horace Greeley (1866 Set of 2 Leather Hardcovers) From Title page: "The American Conflict: A History of The Great Rebellion in the United States of America, 1860-'65. Its Causes, Incidents, and Results: Intended to exhibit Especially its Moral and Political Phases, with the Drift and Progress of American Opinion respecting Human Slavery from 1776 to the close of the War for the Union. By Horace Greeley. Illustrated by Portraits on Steel of Generals, Statesmen, and other Eminent Men: Views of Places of Historic Interest: Maps, Diagrams of Battle-Fields, Naval Actions, etc.: From Official Sources." The author states in his preface to volume I (dated April 10, 1864) that the subject "divides itself into two parts: I. How we got into the War for the Union; and II. How we get out of it." This explains two volumes and what each volume covers. Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was an American newspaper editor and publisher who was the founder and editor of the New-York Tribune in 1841. Long active in politics, he served briefly as a congressman from New York and was an unsuccessful candidate in the 1872 presidential election (He died after the election, but before electoral college results were in.) against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant, who won by a landslide. This history and analysis of causes of the war was written based on the information and opinions found in one of the largest US newspapers of the period. Purest source for understanding the explanations and information given to people of that time. For sale are both original leather volumes, complete yet without spines and with covers only partially bound to text block. Near complete Vol. II spine laid in. All glassine covers for plates still in place. Carefully read book. Leather has degenerated and likely not salvageable. Volume I more tightly bound than Volume II. Set purchased February 1, 1867, by A. E. Wheeler in Rochester, MN. His inscription in both books. Volume I has 25 plates plus 648pp., Volume II has 11 plates plus 782pp., for a total of 698 plus 804, or 1502 pages. Copyright 1866. No detailed dates of print-runs.
