Then it was disbanded on 25 July 1914.On June 29, 1917, the regiment was reactivated for service in the First World War when it consolidated with elements of the 3rd Missouri to create the 140th Infantry in October 1917. The new regiment was assigned to the 35th Division. Within the 35th Division they were assigned to the 70th Brigade alongside the 139th Infantry. Companies of the regiment were drawn primarily from the southeast of the state; Company A hailed from Lexington, Companies B and C were recruited from St. Joseph, Company D came from Sedalia. Companies E, F, G, and H were recruited from Doniphan, Willow Springs, Richmond, and Dexter respectively. Companies I, K, L, and M were pulled from Kennett, Sikeston, Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff respectively. Additional troops were recruited from Jefferson City, Seymour, Carterville, and West Plains.The regiment organised and trained in the United States at Camp Doniphan, Oklahoma and then shipped out for France where it began training under British tutelage in June 1918. In July, the 140th had its first taste of combat in the Gà rardmer sector in the Vosges Mountains, where they conducted raids on German forces. They were moved to the Saint-Mihiel sector in September where they served as a reserve for the First Army. The regiment soon participated in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the largest battle the American Expeditionary Forces waged during the war. After five days of intense battle, they were relieved by elements of the 1st Division and were placed in the Sommedieue sector where they launched harassing attacks on the enemy positions until the Armistice of November 11, 1918, ended the war. Soft Cover. 144 pages. This is apparently an author-published and possibly author-owned copy, with a home-made mimeographed title page and table of contents laid in. "Revised from a series of articles originally published in 1938 in the Manlius Thrift-News." Collated complete. There are a number of pencil notations in the text, for instance dating many of the chapters according to their original newspaper publication, and there are a number of authoritative edits as well, which lead me to believe this was done in the author's hand, likely for subsequent publication. A bit of staining on front cover, else very good condition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.…

Bound in pale brick red cloth with design (Official War Shield of the 6th Field Company) stamped in black and gilt on upper board and lettering on spine. Badly bumped on upper fore tips with minor creasing throughout the text block, and minor bumping on bottom front tip. Internally endpapers are sound, text is unmarked and clean. Dust jacket repeats the Official War Shield on the front panel with text on the rear panel. There is a large piece missing from the rear panel (not affecting text), and smaller chips along the top and bottom edges and a few tears. Not dated. An important and uncommon history of this army unit originally established in North Vancouver, BC. Inscribed on the front pastedown "To Sam from Ted / Xmas 1955", Ted being the Assistant Historian of the book, and one of the engineers that went overseas with the unit. 141 pages with lists of fatal casualties and wounded plus many B&W photos of the unit (including a fold-out panorama of the unit taken in 1941) and its work. Laid into this copy is a signed typed memo from Ted Thomas which sheds light on the publication of this book. In part the memo states "This history was printed in the late 1940's in a limited edition of 500 copies". Signed by Editor.…

Housed in the publisher's slipcase, title on label affixed to spine. All in the publisher's dust jackets, fine condition, $7.50 retail price on front flap. Each volume with the ownership inscription of "Lindbergh" on the front free endpaper. Volume I is inscribed: "To Raymond H. Fredette / With best wishes from / Charles A. Lindbergh." This set includes the original shipping box, personally addressed by Lindbergh to "Col. Raymond H. Fredette," postmarked May 19, 1973. Colonel Raymond H. Fredette (1924-2022) was a distinguished U.S. Air Force officer and historian, and the official biographer of Charles A. Lindbergh. In 1970, after his retirement, Col. Fredette contacted Lindbergh about his Medal of Honor, which he received in 1928 from President Coolidge, in honor of his historic flight. The two aviators met for lunch in Washington, D.C., and began discussions about writing an official biography. Lindbergh agreed and opened his private papers to Fredette, which were held at Yale University. After Lindbergh's death in 1974, Anne Morrow Lindbergh authorized Fredette to continue his writing, but after a dispute with his publisher, a book was never released. Fredette was the author of The Sky on Fire: The First Battle of Britain 1917-1918, which provides a detailed account of the German air raids over London and the defense mounted by the British Royal Flying Corps. A Military History of the Western World by British military historian John F.C. Fuller, from the private collection of Charles Lindbergh.
