Slocum was one of the youngest Union senior officers during the American Civil War; he later served as a Democrat in the US House of Representatives from New York. He was a West Point graduate who tutored his roommate, Philip Sheridan. He led a brilliant military career during the war, and is credited with decisive action in the Union victory at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
