[NOVELTY EPHEMERA / EDWARDIAN ILLUSIONS / HALLOWEEN & OCCULT ART] Original Edwardian era color lithograph interactive novelty postcard published as part of the highly collectible "Valentine's Series" by Valentine & Sons. GRAPHIC & NOVELTY DESIGN: Features a vivid, dramatic illustration of a classic fairytale witch in a bright red robe and black pointed hat, using a magic wand to stir a boiling tripod cauldron. Billowing from the cauldron is a massive white smoke screen forming a large central oval. The lower left corner features a detailed instructional panel titled "MAGIC PHOTOGRAPHY." It reads: "To obtain Magic Portrait hold Card 6 inches from face, gazing steadily on the white oval in centre of Card for a few seconds, then hold to the heat of the fire or gas, when Portrait will gradually be developed." The edge of the oval bears a red patent warning reading "PATENT APPLIED FOR Nº 5183." HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This card is an incredibly rare survivor of Edwardian chemical/thermal invisible ink novelty print. Most examples found today were either ruined by being held too close to gas lamps (leaving heavy burn marks) or have already had their hidden portraits permanently developed. This specimen remains completely unexposed, preserving the chemical oval in its original blank state. POSTAL HISTORY: Postally unused. The reverse cardstock remains completely blank, featuring the elegant flowing typography header "Post Card", a stylized Art Nouveau central vine divider, a decorative stamp box, and the vertical publisher credit "VALENTINE'S SERIES." CONDITION: Very Good antique condition. The front graphic remains exceptionally bright, bold, and visually clean with deep black lines and rich red ink. The blank central oval shows light, entirely natural vintage spotting/foxing from age, but is entirely free of modern marks, text, or heat-exposure changes. The reverse shows uniform age-toning and a scattering of standard foxing spots across the lower half. Edges are square and crisp with minimal corner tip wear. No creases, tears, burns, or pinholes. A premier, highly unusual museum-grade example of early 20th-century interactive parlor tricks and holiday novelty ephemera. Anonymous Comic / Occult Illustrator (ilustrador). …
