At that time, Miller lived among the Apsáalooke people, photographed them, learned to speak the language, and was officially adopted into the nation in 1905.…

From 1898 to 1910, Miller was the clerk on the Crow Reservation in southern Montana, where he photographed the Crow people as they were adapting to reservation life.
