Erste Ausgabe.- Mörikes Übersetzung von 11 bukolischen Gedichten des Theokrit gelten als seine reifste Übersetzerleistung. "Die intensive Beschä…ftigung mit Übersetzungen aus dem Griechischen und Lateinischen hat Mörikes eigene Entwicklung als Lyriker stark beeinflußt" (Weltlit.). Allerdings wäre Mörike bei seinen Griechischkenntnissen nicht in der Lage gewesen, allein nach den Originaltexten zu übersetzen. Er verglich daher alle bereits vorliegenden Verdeutschungen anderer Autoren mit dem griechischen Original, um "das durch Meisterhand bereits Gewonnene bei (seiner) neuen Bearbeitung ganz unbefangen zu nutzen" und, geleitet von dem sicheren Gespür des geborenen Lyrikers, seine eigene "Übersetzung" zu gestalten - ein Verfahren, das bereits Schiller bei seinen Shakespeare-Bearbeitungen erfolgreich angewandt hatte. Die Kritiker loben zwar Mörikes "dichterische Reproduktion", vermissen aber philologische Genauigkeit und Sicherheit im Vers. Die Hauptlast der Übersetzungen und aller Anmerkungen trug allerdings Mörikes Stuttgarter Freund Friedrich Notter (1801 - 1884), den Mörike als soliden Philologen und einen "wirklich dichterischen Geist von großer Tiefe" schätzte.- Kauffmann 144; Borst 2591; Weltliteratur 459; Mörike-Kat.
