Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. Stated First Printing. First Edition. From the front cover: 'The salty and uninhibited autobiography of one of the greatest of the old-time jazz pioneers. Including ten original Perry Bradford songs and more than 50 pages of photographs. You can see the covers in my photos. They are very clean. There are a few small spots of smooth rubbing, a few corner creases. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I haven't found any instances of soiling. A few early pages have a small crease below their top corner and above their bottom corner, none near the print. A handful of consecutive pages in the middle of the book have a very light crease above their bottom corners, again far from the print. There are no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. 'Perry Bradford was an African American composer, songwriter, and vaudeville performer. His most notable songs included Crazy Blues, That Thing Called Love, and You Can't Keep A Good Man Down. He was nicknamed Mule because of his stubbornness, and he is credited with finally persuading Okeh Records to work with Mamie Smith leading to her historic blues recording in 1920. In 1965, Bradford's autobiography Born With the Blues was published (New York: Oak Publications) with a foreword by Noble Sissle.'.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Fine. 1st Edition. This is an extremely rare copy of Westward Bound, by Noble Sissle and Harry Revel. Note that this is the covers only; the two-sided page with the 3 and 4 is missing but can be downloaded from several sites. 'Handsome' Noble Sissle (1889-1975) was the American jazz lyricist, composer, singer, playwright and band leader who was Eubie Blake's writing partner. He is also known for discovering, and first recording, Lena Horne, and for founding the Negro Actors Guild. His song Viper Mad was in Woody Allen's film Sweet and Lowdown. Harry Revel (1905-1958) was a British-American composer, mostly for theatre. He was Mack Gordon's writing partner. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1942 for "There's a Breeze on Lake Louise", from The Mayor of 44th Street, and again in 1945 for "Remember Me to Carolina", from Minstrel Man. Westward Bound was first recorded by The Four Harmony Kings, whose photo is on the cover. This piece is in mint condition, with minor scuffing to the back. It is in its original music store wrapper. NOTE: I have a lot of sheet music listed here. Contact me if you'd like to buy more than one piece and combine shipping.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Noble Lee Sissle was an American jazz composer, lyricist, bandleader, singer, and playwright, best known for the Broadway musical Shuffle Along (1921), and its hit song "I'm Just Wild About Harry".In early 1916, Sissle joined one of the society orchestras organized by James Reese Europe in New York. He persuaded Europe to also hire his friend, pianist and composer Eubie Blake, and later in the year helped Europe organize a regimental band for the 15th Infantry Regiment (Colored) of the New York National Guard. This would later become the New York 369th Infantry "Hell Fighters" Regiment that served nobly in France in World War I, with Europe as a lieutenant and Sissle as his sergeant and lead vocalist.Shortly after World War I, Sissle joined forces with Blake to form a vaudeville music duo, "The Dixie Duo". After vaudeville, the pair began work on the jazz musical revue Shuffle Along, which incorporated many songs they had written, and had a book written by F. E. Miller and Aubrey Lyles. When it premiered in 1921, Shuffle Along became the first hit musical on Broadway written by and about African Americans. It was the first all-black show to reach the Broadway stage in over a decade and included a teenage Josephine Baker among the performers. The musical introduced songs such as "I'm Just Wild About Harry" and "Love Will Find a Way". Sissle died in Tampa in 1975. The sheet music is accompanied by a cut signature mounted on part of a black album page, 4 3/4 by 1 1/2 inches . ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 4 pages; Signed by Author.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. The music was first published in 1921 when it was a hit from the musical "Shuffle Along" by the two jazz composers, Sissle and Blake. This Victory Version has another lyric at the inside front page as a Truman celebration. Above the Victory Version is Eubie Blake signed in black ink. The music is three pages with piano and guitar chords. Featured on the front and back covers are b/w photos of Harry Truman. Music measures 9" x 12-1/4." Also found inside the music is a letter copy from Marion Blake promoting the book Reminiscing with Sissle & Blake and a 1976 catalog of Sissle & Blake jazz, ragtime, and vocal recordings. The music is in good condition. It appears that there was a tear at the lower front on Truman's arm but it has been mended or glued nicely. Smudges and light red bleed from the front are at the inside center fold; smudging on the first page of the song at the left side edge. Crease line at the front left bottom corner and light wear at the spine ends of cover. Sheet music.

Añadir al carritoJames Reese Europe (18811919) was a composer and bandleader instrumental in the transition from ragtime to jazz, whose popularity and influence is impossible to overstate. He conducted the Clef Club Orchestra in New York City, which only played music by African-American composers and was the first Black orchestra to perform at Carnegie Hall. Europe's Society Orchestra toured the country with dancers Vernon and Irene Castle, popularizing ragtime dancing. In 1916, Europe enlisted with the 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters, a primarily Black regiment that became one of the most highly decorated American units in World War I. Europe was a second lieutenant and led the Hellfighters Band, which toured France in 1818 and is credited with bringing jazz to the continent of Europe. James Europe died in Boston in 1919 when a member of his band, taking issue with Europe's criticism, stabbed him in the neck during the intermission of a concert at Mechanics Hall. Offered here is the sheet music for "Good Night Angeline", composed by James Reese Europe and his frequent collaborators, Noble Sissle (18891975) and James Herbert "Eubie" Blake" (18871983). The cover features a photograph of the Hellfighters Band above a portrait of Europe. We find four other copies of "Good Night Angeline", at the Oakland Public Library, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture. Of interest to scholars of African-American musical and military history. Small ownership stamp to top margin, some light wear, overall very good. Sheet music measuring 9 ¼ x 12 ¼ inches.
