Illuminated initial letters appear throughout the text. Bound in the publisher's white buckram, with gilt titles to the spine and upper board, decorative blocking in gilt and electric blue, gilt top edge, and pictorial endpapers. Housed in a matching electric-blue cloth-covered hinged clamshell box, decorated in gilt with titles and motifs to the spine and upper panel. Printed by Henry Stone and Sons Ltd., Bunbury. 164pp. 4to. Nielson, a prominent figure in the Golden Age of Illustration as well as a collaborator with Walt Disney, was born in Copenhagen in 1886. After studying art in Paris and moving to England in 1911, this book was his first English commission from Hodder and Stoughton. In 1939, after a career in illustration and stagecraft, once he had become Scandinavia's most famous artist, Nielson moved to California and worked in Hollywood. His collaborations included the enchanting Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria sequences of the Disney movie Fantasia (1940) as well as Sleeping Beauty (1959) and preliminary concept paintings for a proposed adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid which would come to fruition some 50 years later.
