(3) "Map Illustrative of the Distribution of Plants." (4) "Map Illustrative of Winds, Rain, Tides, Currents, and Temperature." (5) "Map Illustrative of Distribution of Surface Rocks, Coal, and Minerals, Ocean Depths, and Great Circle Routes". Decorative diced and deckled publisher's cloth. VG copy. Lovely work.

Later "New" Edition, the first edition was published in 1836. Half leather binding, spine with 5 raised bands and gilded title and decorations. Pages very lightly browned, no damages or markings. Cover with light shelf wear. 18 letters written by the author to her family in England about her journey to Canada and her life with her husband, a lieutenant in the 21st Fusiliers. Includes information on home-making under pioneer conditions, pioneer recipes for making maple sugar, vinegar, etc. Later "New" edition (1st. edition was 1836).

Condición: very good. 1st Edition. 226pp. 16 mo in original cloth and pale yellow coated endpapers with wood engraved frontispiece and 2 maps (1 folding). Some minor staining on rear boards. very good Description of the early settlement, fur trade and Indian tribes of the Oregon Territory by a staunch supporter of the British side of the dispute. He advocated that the boundary between the two countries be the northern border of California.

Leather bound. Condición: Very Good+. First Edition. 12mo. (4-1/4 x 6-1/4). Pp. viii, [1], 2-351, 2-78. Frontis. etching "Peter, the Chief." Illustrated with an additional twenty etchings and a map. Full calf, gilt and blind borders on the covers, spine decorations and black lettering piece in gilt between five raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges. Corners gently bumped, edges rubbed, spine sunned, leaves clean and bright in a solid binding. A key volume in the Pacific Northwest border controversy that gave us the rallying cry "Fifty-four Forty or Fight!" Nicolay, although British, purports to present a neutral view of the matter. That said, he argues for ceding to the British land north of the California border. Following publication, the border conflict was resolved by when the Treaty of Washington (1846) was jointly signed by the US and Great Britain. Per Tweney, "this book is often found bound with a book entitled, The Backwoods of Canada .", as is this volume, although the two titles are here transposed, with the Oregon work abridged. First edition. Very nice copy of this book printed for English youth and published the year in which the Treaty of Washington was signed, ending the dispute between Great Britain and the U.S. over title to the Oregon Country. Tweney mentions in hisWashington Eighty-Nine: "This book gives the English side of the Oregon boundary dispute, and urges that the northern line of California be the natural boundary between the two countries." Besides presenting arguments, the book is also very descriptive in the early settlement of the Pacific Northwest and rise of the fur trade.
