La gravure au pointillé une technique très précise et qui demande beaucoup de temps. Leciselet doit être enfoncé sur la plaque afin de produire un creux; l'opération sera répétée de nombreuses fois afin d'obtenir des valeurs allant du noir au grisé (demi-teintes). Le résultat évoque autant une gravure qu'une lithographie.À la fin du XVIIIe siècle, certains graveurs ont commencé à utiliser la couleur dans la gravure en pointillé. Plutôt que d'utiliser des plaques séparées pour chaque couleur, comme dans la plupart des processus d'impression couleur de l'époque, les différentes couleurs étaient appliquées avec un pinceau sur une seule plaque pour chaque impression, une opération très délicate qui s'est rapidement avérée économiquement non viable.
