The inspiration of the sailing ship for the artist, manifest in the great marine paintings of four hundred years, is part of the adventure too. So are the excitement and love inspired by the sailing ship in ordinary people, which created the demand for innumerable simple prints of ships throughout the age of sail. Captain Donald Macintyre has written a historical record of four centuries, from the first circumnavigation of the world to the virtual disappearance of the square~rigged ship. This is followed by a selection of contemporary writings of many nations, from 1520 to 1914 ( Francisco Antonio Pigafetta, William Bourne, Sir Francis Drake the Younger, Don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, Gerrit de Veer, Willem Cornelison Schouten, Thomas Heywood, A. Richer, George Lord Anson, Louis de Bougainville, Captain James Cook, Horatio Viscount Nelson, Captain Isaac Hull USN, Richard Dana, Captain H. A. Chippendale USN, Basil Lubbock, Basil Greenhill CBE, Joseph Conrad, etc.), each piece showing an important aspect of the age of sail, the whole combining with over three hundred beautiful illustrations to give a comprehensive picture of the sailing ship experience. Captain Macintyre traces the development of sails, rigging and hull design, from the caravel, carrack and galleon to the clipper epoch, when the sailing ship became a thing of visual and functional perfection; and beyond to the autumn of the age of sail, to the great steel~hulled four and five~masted barques and barquentines, which had a strange beauty of their own.' He tells the story of maritime exploration and the establishment of commerce : a story of friendly or hostile competition among nations sharing the common experience of the struggle against the sea. Adventure, in the ordinary sense of dramatic and exciting episodes, fills the history of sail and has received an extraordinary amount of eyewitness documentation. The selection of contemporary documents in this volume unfolds a stirring tale of storms, shipwrecks and fights, of famous ships and the men who sailed in them. It shows, as nothing else can, what life in sailing ships was really like. It relives great moments of discovery or despair, such as the first rounding of Cape Horn, or the last voyage of Willem Barents in his brave and futile search for the Northeast Passage, ennobled by the courage and dignity of a crew lost among ice and polar bears in the dark, dreaded Arctic winter. It evokes the brutality of life at sea, but also its warmer, more humorous side. After the horrors of Anson's voyage it is a relief to read of Bougainville's reception at Tahiti and the meeting of Cook's sailors with the nymphs of Nootka Sound. The odyssey of the human spirit is ever present in The Adventure of Sail, from the perceptive introduction by the famous modern sailing man and boat designer, Uffa Fox, to the highly.…

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some very very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, top corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks unread. 525pp. presents around 500 of the most important letters uncovered during the course of the epic Nelson Letters Project, a five year search of archives throughout the world. Dating from 1777 and including the earliest extant Nelson letter, this collection shows us both Nelson the officer and Nelson the private man, and, uniquely among the plethora of new Nelson books, it records his life and exploits in his own words. Written in Nelson's free flowing and conversational style, these letters introduce a very real and human figure bringing us much closer to an otherwise distant historical hero. Colin White's accompanying annotations and essays place Nelson's life and letters in full context. So alongside letters to the Duke of Clarence (later King William IV), Prime Minister Addington, and dignitaries like the King and Queen of Naples, covering treaty negotiations, battle orders and campaign plans, we can also read warm missives to family and friends, informal notes and instructions to colleagues and subordinates and some eloquently passionate letters to Emma Hamilton. Other highlights include Nelson's account of the Battle of Copenhagen, detailed orders for the Trafalgar and Nile campaigns, notes of his careful diplomatic negotiations, his network of personal contacts, and his concern with his public image. Published to mark the 200th anniversary of Nelson's death at Trafalgar. A very large heavy book, extra postage may be required. …

Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. STEVENS, Thomas (1828-1888). The Death of Nelson. Coventry: Thomas Stevens, c.1883-1898. Original silk-woven Stevengraph mounted on grey card, the woven image approximately 175 x 60 mm, overall mount 270 x 160 mm. Printed "WOVEN IN SILK" beneath the image with the title "The Death of Nelson". Original printed Thomas Stevens catalogue label to the reverse, listing this and other available subjects. The silk itself remains bright and well preserved. The mount with rubbing and wear to the edges and corners, some general handling marks, and a short tear to the lower left edge. Printed label to reverse creased and toned. Good to Very Good overall. An attractive Victorian Stevengraph depicting the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, after Daniel Maclise's celebrated composition. Maclise's monumental treatment of the subject was created for the Palace of Westminster and became one of the best-known nineteenth-century images of Nelson's death. Thomas Stevens of Coventry pioneered the production of these finely woven silk pictures using adapted Jacquard looms. Known as "Stevengraphs", they depicted historical events, portraits, sporting scenes and other popular subjects, and were produced in considerable variety during the later nineteenth century. The Death of Nelson is among the firm's more collectible compositions. An example is held by the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, which dates the design to c.1883-1898.…

Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. NELSON, Horatio, Viscount Nelson. The Death of Lord Nelson, October 21, 1805. London: Thomas Kelly, Paternoster Row, 17 May 1815. Engraved historical scene. Image approximately 125 x 185 mm on a sheet measuring approximately 210 x 270 mm. Captioned beneath image "The Death of Lord Nelson, October 21, 1805" with publication line "London, Published by Thomas Kelly, Paternoster Row, May 17, 1815." A crisp, well-preserved impression with generous margins and unusually clean, near fine appearance. A dramatic depiction of the mortally wounded Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson is shown collapsing into the arms of attendants while the action continues around him, capturing one of the defining moments in British naval history. The scene draws together the elements that became central to Nelson's legend: heroic sacrifice, victory in battle, and the preservation of British naval supremacy during the Napoleonic Wars. Published by Thomas Kelly of Paternoster Row on 17 May 1815, the engraving appeared only weeks before the Battle of Waterloo and at a moment when Britain once again faced the prospect of conflict with Napoleon.…

Good.  Scarce patriotic sheet music celebrating the British victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and the elevation of Admiral Lord Nelson into the national pantheon. The title proclaims Nelson "enroll'd in the annals of fame" and is dedicated "to those irresistible Heroes the Officers & Seamen of the British Navy". The text commemorates Nelson's victories at the Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar, while also praising Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood and the wider achievements of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. NELSON, Lord Horation; DIBDIN, Thomas. The Death of Nelson, on the Twenty First of October. Sung by Mr. Incledon, in the Interlude of Nelson's Glory, at the Theatre Royal Covent Garden. London: Printed & Sold by Preston, at his Wholesale Warehouses, 97 Strand, [1805]. Folio bifolium, 320 x 240 mm, pp. [4]. Engraved musical notation and printed text. Small holes and minor wear along former stitching line, old folds, a little creasing and light marking, but a sound and well-preserved example. Good.  Scarce patriotic sheet music issued in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Admiral Lord Nelson on 21 October 1805. Written by the dramatist and songwriter Thomas Dibdin (1771-1841), the piece formed part of Nelson's Glory, a theatrical interlude performed at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, one of several productions mounted in response to Britain's greatest naval victory. The lyrics celebrate Nelson's triumph over the combined French and Spanish fleets while simultaneously memorialising his death in battle.  The song was performed by the celebrated tenor Charles Incledon (1763-1826), among the most popular singers of the Georgian stage. His prominent appearance on the title-page reflects both his celebrity status and the commercial appeal of such commemorative productions. Printed by the Strand music publisher Preston and sold for one shilling, the work was intended for immediate performance and domestic consumption during the wave of public mourning and patriotic enthusiasm that followed Trafalgar.…

Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. [NELSON, Lord Horatio] A perspective view of the grand funeral car which carried the body of the much lamented Lord Nelson, from the Admiralty to St Pauls, in great procession, on the 9th January, 1806. London, published Jan. 14th, 1806, by N. Heideloff, No. 12, Norfolk Street; printed by Vogel, 13 Poland Street, Oxford Street. Broadside, approx. 380 x 240 mm, hand-coloured engraved illustration above printed descriptive text and verse. Laid down on later card backing. Creasing throughout, with several tears and splits (notably centre left and upper centre), edges worn with small losses; some light spotting; nevertheless complete. Good.  A contemporary commemorative broadside depicting Nelson's funeral car, issued within days of the state funeral of January 1806. The large engraved image shows the elaborate hearse designed in the form of a ship, adorned with trophies and inscriptions including 'Trafalgar', 'L'Orient', and 'San Josef', visually encapsulating Nelson's naval victories. Beneath, a detailed printed description explains the iconography and symbolism of the car, together with a poetic elegy to Nelson. So moves the corpse upon the trophied bier, Mourned by his king! embalmed with Englands tear! To that famed church that lifts its towering head The future mansion of the patriot dead! The hero's manes there in peace shall rest,  while his loved image lives in every breast.  Such broadsides were produced in the immediate aftermath of Trafalgar and Nelson's death, but survival is comparatively uncommon given their ephemeral nature. A striking and decorative Trafalgar item, issued within days of Nelson's funeral. …

First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with slight toning to the spine. Lord Nelson's brilliant naval strategy and unparalleled command gave Britain total supremacy at sea and made him a national hero. Much of his success, however, was also due to the Band of Brothers under his command; the most loyal and dedicated officers that the Royal Navy had ever seen. They included Troubridge, that dear good soul; Hardy, with whom Nelson was always in accord; Berry, his right hand; Fremantle, his staunch supporter; and Hood, gentle and unaffected. Despite their different backgrounds and outlooks, they were united in their devotion to Nelson. The author tells the stories of these Captains and the exploits they commanded under Nelson.…
