Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Howard Chandler Christy Ilustrador. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. The Old Gentleman of the Black Stock, by Thomas Nelson Page. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1900. First illustrated edition, with eight color plates by Howard Chandler Christy, including a color-illustrated title page. The decorative cloth binding was designed by Margaret Armstrong, one of the notable American binding designers of the period, signed with her monogram on the front board, and the volume was printed by D. B. Updike at the Merrymount Press, Boston, as recorded in the colophon. This copy carries a gift inscription reading "From cousin Corina, Dec. 1900," contemporary to the year of publication, along with several later pencil ownership notations from subsequent owners. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Condition is Good: the cloth shows fraying and small areas of loss at the head and tail of the spine, with wear and lifting cloth at one board corner, and moderate scattered foxing to the endpapers and front free leaf. The text block is clean and complete, and the Christy color plates remain bright and unmarked throughout. A handsome, honestly-graded copy of a well-documented Armstrong binding, suited to readers and collectors who want the Christy illustrations and period design without paying a premium for a pristine copy.

Hardcover in blue-green cloth ornately decorated with Mararet Armstrong designed cover and spine. Printed by D.B. Updike at the Merrymount Press, Boston. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. 169 pp. With color illustrated title page and 7 additional full page color illustrations by Christy. Very good, front gilt bright, narrow crescent tidemarks to the bottom of the pages not affecting the text. The story of Mr.George Fairfax, an old, widowed farmer in the Virginia mountains who is thought to be stern and unfriendly because he always wears black, but is actually kind and generous. He takes in a young orphan boy and tells the youth of his experience in the American Revolutionary War and of his lost love. The book was first published in 1896 but this, the preferred edition, has a number of things going for it that earlier editions did not: the beautful Howard Chandlet Christy illustrations, the Margaret Armstrong art nouveau binding design, and the famous printer, D.B. Updike of the Merrymount Press.
