Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet with string binding (small piece of string bound about halfway or 2/3 down from top near spine). Black lettering on front cover. 6" x 8 1/2." Forty-seven pages, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall except for a small closed tear on fore-edge of P…age 47, chipping and splitting along spine, two smudges at the bottom of Pages 8-9, a few small chips and smudging on front, occasional small marks or stains, and light age toning. A Very Good copy. This is a commemorative pamphlet that contains the printed text of an oration by Dr. J. D. B. Stillman and a poem by Mrs. James Neall. The pamphlet commemorates the 24th Anniversary of the Corporate Society of California Pioneers, which took place on September 9, 1874, as well as California pioneers in general. In his address, Stillmann gives a brief but sweeping tour of early California history and how the California pioneers arrived. He briefly references how the American West was still relatively unknown to white settlers while the Eastern states became developed; Farnham's Travels in California which documented a still relatively uninhabited California; early Sacramento Valley with its "oak ., ash, covered with wild grape vines ., beautiful glades and savannahs"; Fremont's reconnaissance of California; Mexican treaties; steamers to California; early California life; the California Gold Rush; San Francisco; development of modern technology and transportation in California; and emigration to California. Poem by Mrs. Neall follows. The first stanza from her poem: "O bells of memory, ring your chimes to-day-- / Let your sweet echoes float upon the air / And reach afar, that to your call may come / The miner from his toil; the granger from his ranch / Among the hills; the merchant from his wares; / The student from his dusty tomes of thought. / Ring out with clamorous tongue--invite the wanderers back-- / Omitting not the mother-pioneers, / Who shared the perils of our early day, / With cheerful outlook on the brightest side.".

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper wrappers. Black lettering on front cover. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2." Forty-seven pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, a shallow vertical crease at center throughout, small occasional marks, and occasional chipping limited to edges o…r corners. Covers are clean and intact overall but have browning and darkening, several small chips along spine and at edges and corners, and shallow vertical creases at center on front and back. A Very Good copy. This is a commemorative pamphlet containing transcriptions of an oration given by J. D. B. Stillman and a poem recited by Mrs. James Neall on the occasion of the 24th Anniversary of the Corporate Society of California Pioneers. Also included herein is a brief Welcome Address by Vice President Staples in front and a list of passenger arrivals at the Port of San Francisco in 1849 in back. Stillman's oration is on Pages 9-27. Neall's poem is on Pages 31-34. In his address, Stillman discusses the history of California in the 1840s and earlier when the region was not yet extensively explored by white American settlers. He refers to the Mexican-American War of that decade and contemporary world events which he describes as forwarding democratic governance. He notes Farnham's early account of California as well as John C. Fremont's early travels to California. He proceeds to describe the onset of "gold fever" when the first widespread report of the discovery of gold in California in October 1848 was published. Stillman says that the report was met with skepticism and even ridicule at first, but then as credibility of the reports was confirmed, people flocked from all over the U.S. and even abroad to try and strike it rich. He describes contemporary reactions to the California Gold Rush ranging from doubting editors who initially cautioned against the gamble of gold mining but got swept up in gold fever, ministers' warnings about the moral dangers of thirsting for gold, and physicians, deep in debt, who left their homes and tried to strike it rich. He cites contemporary poetry and accounts including descriptions of people traveling by various modes of transportation including ship, wagon, horseback, and on foot. Stillman discusses the hardships and dangers the emigrants and travelers faced such as cholera, precarious terrain, river crossings, and attacks by Indigenous people. He notes how many of them, discouraged, turned around and headed back home. He highlights the torturous passage through the desert between the Great Salt Lake and the Sierra Nevada where there was little food or water. He then says for those fortunate enough to reach Sacramento Valley, they still had to contend with a derth of food provisions and an abundance of diseases. Stillman says the hardships endured by these early California pioneers formed the basis of the friendship and union between members of the Society of California Pioneers. Stillman closes with some information about the increasing California population in the subsequent years and California's statehood and words of tribute to California pioneers. Neall's poem also pays tribute to the California pioneers.
