A scarce catalogue from the early years of the State of Israel, devoted to one of the most famous Jewish artists, Marc Chagall. With 20 pp. texts in French and in Hebrew, dos-a-dos, with a section of plates reproducing 22 works by Chagall, in color and b/w. There are cover titles and title pages in each language. The texts are printed on paper of low quality which is now toned and somewhat brittle, (with a few nicks and chips to the fore-edge of the French section of the text. The lower corner of the wrapper in French is worn, with minor loss, and there is a short (5mm) tear at the center of the fore-edge. A limited number of, numbered, copies were printed on better quality paper. This is copy 996. Mordechai Narkiss (1898 in Skala, Poland - 1957 Jerusalem, Israel) was an Israeli art historian. Narkiss immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1920, where he also changed his name to Narkiss. After studying at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, he began work there and in 1932 after the death of Boris Schatz he became the director of the museum. Narkiss was an expert in Jewish art and numismatics.

This is a spiral notebook of high quality photocopies of the original which was issued in a limited edition of 400 copies. Creating this copy was no simple matter. It entailed breaking the spine of the original, then, since the illustrations were not photographed under ideal or consistent lighting, many illustrations had to be photocopied several times at different light/dark settings in order to obtain a good quality reproduction. And, finally, it was professionally bound with a spinal back so it can be opened lflat.
