- I: Zweite Auflage der deutschen Erstausgabe. XXII, 438 pp. With 3 engraved plates. Contemporary full red morocco with giltstamped cover borders and prettily gilt spine. Inner dentelle gilt. Blue marbled pastedowns. All edges gilt. First edition of a principal contemporary account of Napoleon's coronation at Notre Dame and the subsequent public celebrati…ons, preserved in an elegant period binding. - The publication provides a detailed narrative of the "sacre" of 2 December 1804 officiated by Pius VII, followed by descriptions of the illuminations, fireworks, processions, performances, and civic festivities across Paris. It opens with the sequence of ceremonial acts and the order of the procession, and concludes with a statistical "Tableau de la situation de l'Empire Français", situating the event within the administrative and political state of the Empire. Includes three engraved portraits of Napoleon, Empress Joséphine, and Pope Pius VII, underscoring the dynastic and ecclesio-political dimensions of the ceremony. - Anonymously issued by Guérin and Barba as part of the intense contemporary print response to the coronation; the work complements Dusaulchoy's "Histoire du couronnement" (1805) and the architectural record by Percier and Fontaine (1807) that documented the festive apparatus. - Corners faintly bumped, otherwise in excellent condition.

Añadir al carritoLarge 8vo and folio (290 x 442 mm). 3 volumes. (4), LV, 406, (2) pp. (4), 355, (1) pp. Vol. 3 (atlas): title-page, index, and 18 double-sided engraved maps (ca. 45 x 31,5 cm neatline). Contemporary half calf with gilt title to spine and giltstamped morocco label to upper cover of the atlas, identifying the volumes as a gift from… Bertrand's son. Original wrappers bound within. Marbled endpapers. First and only edition of Napoleon's memoirs of his French campaign in Egypt and Syria as dictated to his general and grand maréchal du palais, Henri-Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844), during his exile in St. Helena (1815-21). Bertrand was the only one of Napoleon's loyal companions in exile to have participated in the Egyptian campaign, which explains his choice of subject. - The two volumes of text present an ample, if subjective account of the famous military campaigns, enriched with transcripts of numerous official documents and letters relating to the events described. The beautiful atlas, engraved by Alexandre Moisy (1763-1827), presents 18 partly hand-coloured maps that are mostly in direct connection with the campaign. Including a general map of the south-eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea, a map of the Mediterranean with the movements of the French and British fleets, a map of Egypt, a map of Syria and the Middle East, maps of the invasion of Malta, the Battle of the Nile, the Battle of the Pyramids, the Siege of Acre (with an engraved veduta of the city), the Battle of Mount Tabor, and the Battle of Aboukir. Four maps of parts of Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands represent additional theatres of the War of the Second Coalition in 1799. - Bertrand's "Guerre d'Orient" was published 26 years after Napoleon's death in exile and three years after Bertrand's own passing, on the initiative of his son, general Henri-Alexandre-Arthur Bertrand, who gifted the copy at hand to its first owner, as indicated by the morocco cover label on the atlas. - Lower right corner of the atlas slightly bumped, occasional minor foxing and browning in all volumes. Atlas with several minor tears (not affecting the maps) and occasional marks and scribbles in ink, ballpoint, and crayon.

Añadir al carrito16mo (135 x 96 mm). Wrapper title. Two livraisons (all published): 1) 4 pp., [9] stipple-engraved plates, a few signed by Bosselman, one after Coeur.? 2) [1] leaf, [7] plates. Light foxing to first text page. On guards. Original blue printed wrappers, edges untrimmed,? preserved in late 19th or early 20th-century? straight-grain…ed dark blue morocco gilt, edges untrimmed (spine sunned). Provenance: Antoine Bordes, bookplate; Sidney G. Reilly, Napoleonica collector, bookplate (sale, New York, American Art Association, 4 May 1921, lot 830).? Only Edition. A quirky little royalist publication, probably intended for children, containing 16 stipple-engraved portraits of Napoleon and his family, ranging from small to tiny, as well as Louis XVI and his family, and, in the second part, the reigning King, Louis XVIII, the former Empress Marie-Luise, the Duchesse d?Angouleme (Marie-Antoinette?s daughter), Lucien Bonaparte (brother of Napoleon), and Prince Eug?ne (Napoleon?s adopted son).? The introduction explains the seemingly odd juxtaposition of Emperor and Royalty, as a way of highlighting their respective historical and moral significance: for example, while Louis XVI and Napoleon both lost the throne, the one was ?victim of his own goodness? while the other was ?a plaything of his own madness? (un jouet de sa fureur), one was stingy with French blood, while the other expended it freely; finally each represent a link in the chain of being, one to the angels, the other to the demons.? Mystifyingly, two of the portraits in the second part were engraved in miniature, on a regular plate. The contents page describes them as ?tres-petits? and leaves it at that. David-Ferdinand Ostervald (1763-1843), called ?the elder? to distinguish him from his brother the cartographer Jean-Fr?d?ric Ostervald, published prints, print suites, and illustrated books in Paris from the 18teens to the 1820s.?OCLC lists 5 copies of which 3 in the US: UNC Chapel Hill, Univ. of Washington, and Syracuse University. The Syracuse copy dates the book to 1816 after the portfolio title; the entry for the UNC and U. Washington copies, which clearly lack the wrappers with imprint, erroneously dates the edition to 1880 and cites 17 plates, but our copy contains all of the plates called for in the introduction to part 1 and the table of contents to part 2.? Not in the BnF catalogue.

Añadir al carrito8vo. 144 pp. Splendid modern red morocco, fully gilt to spine, covers, leading edges, inner dentelle, signed by Hatchard's, Piccadilly. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. First edition; rare. The first refutation of the famous "Manuscrit venu de Sainte-Hélène, d'une manière inconnue", which was published anonymously in London ear…lier that same year. This mysterious "manuscript", an apology of Napoleon Bonaparte's actions and intentions, was supposedly written by Napoleon himself or by a close friend. While soon exposed as a fraud, the work was long variously attributed to Madame de Staël, Charles Tristan Comte de Montholon, Benjamin Constant and E. J. Sieyes before Frédéric Lullin de Châteauvieux (1772-1841) from Geneva, a friend of Madame de Staël, was established as the author. Napoleon himself composed a refutation which was later published. The present anonymous publication is sometimes attributed to the publisher Michaud himself. "La première réfutation qui ait été faite de ce fameux libelle" (Hoefer). A perfect, wide-margined specimen bound in sumptuous red full morocco by Hatchards of London. - Hoefer XXXVII, 447.20. Not in Barbier. Not in Martin & Walter.

Añadir al carrito193 forage dockets signed by French officers. Stored in sets or singly within contemporary printed French Army archival envelopes, in turn stored in four collector's portfolios (ca. 1900). All bound in half cloth with handwritten cover title, small folio (ca. 23 x 28 cm). An encompassing collection of forage receipts from French-occupied Leipzig, signed by important Napoleonic officers (many commanding), including Jacques Allain (1773-1851), Louis Hullin de Boischevalier (1770-1809), Louis-Jacques de Coehorn (1771-1813), Joseph Goll (1771-1850), Jean-Michel Haudebault (1766-1837), Louis-Joseph Maupoint (1766-1850), Simon Prévost de Vernois (1778-1859), Jean-Gaspard René (1769-1808), Auguste Talhouet (1788-1842), Jean-Marie de Varlet (1775-1857), and Charles-Louis Vimeux (1787-1859). - Although the cheaper and more flexible infantry continued to form the backbone of the Napoleonic army and Napoleon's attention as a military commander was always to the artillery, horses were indispensable not only for the cavalry units of the fighting arms, but also for army logistics, not least for moving the heavy cannons. However, in the early 19th century horses were a scarce commodity for the overstretched French coffers: most studs lay outside the country's borders, and the gaps that the mass exodus of the nobility had inflicted on the ranks of the cavalry officers were only slowly being stopped by returning emigrés and promotions of younger soldiers. It is therefore little surprise that all expenses disbursed upon the almost unjustifiably costly animals were recorded with meticulous precision - especially those for the incessant foraging. - The present collection of receipts, stored together in envelopes pre-printed by the French army, bears witness to the scrupulous organisation of horse provisioning. When Prussia and Saxony were occupied by France after the battles of Jena and Auerstedt on 14 October 1806, Marshal Davout entered Leipzig on 18 October, and indeed, the first forage docket preserved here is dated October 19th. The receipts are written by secretaries, sometimes on pre-printed forms, and signed by the various officers, NCOs, soldiers, and military officials, with secretarial counter-signatures. - Mostly preserved in excellent condition within their original archival envelopes, lacking only a very few sheets (as compared to the envelopes' captions). Inserted into four portfolios early in the 20th century and catalogued in a typed list with biographical notes on the writers. Compared to the inventory as listed ca. 1928, the present set no longer includes a "small folder" that appears mainly to have comprised receipts by Bory, Guyardet, Siry, Souplet, Thevenet, and Varlet (of which the form envelopes and two receipts still remain). - Provenance: Assembled from the German trade (including R. Hönisch and W. Hiersemann of Leipzig and H. Burmeister and J. A. Stargardt of Berlin), mainly between 1918 and 1928 (with additions to 1938) by an unnamed collector who, according to his catalogue, lived in Zehlendorf, served on the Macedonian front in 1918, and hailed from a military noble family whose estate was in Appelwerder (West Prussia); his unidentified arms are stamped on page 1. Acquired from a private collector.

Añadir al carritoOblong folio (312 x 238 mm). 11 lithographed and engraved plans, mostly folding. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards with handwritten title label. A privately assembled collection of maps and plans showing Napoleon's campaigns and battles, mainly drawn from Johann Friedrich Constantin von Lossau's "Charakteristik der Kri…ege Napoleons" (1843), the three atlas volumes of which ("Karten und Pläne zur Charakteristik der Kriege Napoleons") appeared between 1843 and 1847. Also, there is a map of Crimea and the Black Sea: "Küsten Karte des Schwarzen Meeres" (drawn by Anton Müller and engraved by H. K. Jungh, printed by F. Kargl). Furthermore, two unlabelled hand-drawn maps ink blue and black ink showing the same area, loosely inserted. Mostly wrinkled, browned and waterstained; some paper flaws. Some plans have hand-drawn additions, annotations or overlays. Pencil notes to flyleaf. Signs of frequent use. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel (1939-2015) with his handwritten and stamped ownership (dated 1976) to pastedown.

Each puzzle has 20 pieces: the first depicts Napoleon calmly sleeping in a chair after having given orders to his generals on the eve of the battle of Austerlitz (1 Dec. 1805); the second shows Napoleon addressing an exhausted soldier - a scene from the battle of Lodi on 10 May 1796, fought between Napoleon's forces and the Austrian rear guard commanded by Johann Beaulieu. The third puzzle shows Napoleon as merciful emperor, receiving the thankful wife and children of a Prussian lord accused of conspiracy, whom he pardoned. The puzzle matching the scene depicted on the top of the box is not included. - A few pieces lightly cracked; box well preserved. A good set.
