Very few people could even grasp all of the details of this book in single day. Designed for family reading nights. There are 6 long stories (around 20 pages long), 49 Short stories and poems, 22 full-color full-page illustrations, and 2 Black & Tint illustrations associated with 43 authors and 16 illustrators listed in the table of contents. There are more illustrations in the body of this book, some signed or attributed, some not. 200 pages. The book for sale's condition is rated above average/standard. This was a popular priced item which is now about 100 years old. Hardcover with cloth spine has worn through edges and spine would have been torn off except for magic tape repair. Binding is complete but loose. No children markings noticed, although an adult hand inscribed as 1926 Christmas gift. Illustration plate p 27 has been torn out and laid in without repair. Few pages show handling and paper is not foxing. There is a store sticker of "The May Co. Book Section" in the rear end-pages. No copyright/publication dates found. Printed in Great Britain. Jansky, pp.1920-1932 In Proceedings of the IRE, vol.20, no.12 (Dec.1932) THE BIRTH OF RADIO ASTRONOMY "Working at Bell Labs, (Karl G.) Jansky was given the task of investigating factors that could interfere with radio waves used for long-distance communication. He designed a linear directional antenna, which, mounted on wheels from a Model T Ford, could scan the sky. He identified all the sources of interference, such as thunderstorms, except for one weak emission. This he found to be unconnected with the Sun and in 1931 he discovered that the radio interference came from the stars. Jansky published his findings in the Proceedings of the Institute of Radio Engineers in December 1932 ['Directional Studies of Atmospherics at High Frequencies'], the date that marks precisely the beginnings of radio astronomy" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). The collection contains 155 original papers, lists members and the applicants for IRE membershio during 1932 with demographic information, lists both local and international conventions and several hundred ads for appliances and equipment used in the industry. Each complete monthly magazine is bound separately as a softcover with glue and stapled binding. Hardcover binder holds each magazine into place with metal bands into metal braces. Binder is embossed with faded gold highlights. We found it stored in an outbuilding so has been cleaned and pages are aged, with some bookworm markings, and somewhat brittle.
