But Soviet Jews, aided by their American brothers and sisters, persevered. Their protests paid off in 1990 when the gates of freedom began to open. With a mass relocation of refugees imminent, and funding urgently needed, the United Jewish Appeal leaped into action. UJA began by inviting the wealthiest Jews in America to breakfast~at a million dollars a plate~and raised a breathtaking $58 million in an hour. It took other top prospects to the Soviet Union to meet Jews desperate to escape, and brought in millions more. Then it moved forward with several other initiatives. Meanwhile, its local partners, the Jewish federations, carried the ball in cities and towns. In just four years, UJA and federations persuaded more than a million Americans to give greatly~a total of $882 million~enough to take half a million Soviet Jews to Israel. Named "Operation Exodus"by the author, the wildly successful fundraising campaign helped make possible the largest voluntary movement of Jews since the Exodus from Egypt. While rescuing Soviet Jews, Operation Exodus helped Israel ransom 14,000 Jews trapped in a ferocious civil war in Ethiopia. They were flown over the Red Sea, in a modern reprise of an ancient miracle, to the Jewish State. In a world filled with racial strife, whites brought blacks out of Africa, not to be slaves but to be free. Operation Exodus also saved 6,000 others: imperiled Jews, Christians and Muslims. How, exactly, did UJA manage to raise so much so fast and help pull off these rescues? This book shows how.
