226 pages. Hardcover: H 27.25cm x L 20.25cm. Black boards, front board minimally decorated with raised lettering within respective bands of dulled gilt, slight scuffing at spine ends. Brown stain at lower fore-edge fractionally affecting several leaves at their margins; pervasive mild rippling and light toning to interior leaves… from past moisture exposure but with minimal occurrences of any obtrusive tidelines. A good copy. With olive endpapers and b/w photographs throughout. Campus photos on pages 21-28 and "The Ladies" portrait section on pages 144-152 are uncredited but likely the work of local studio photographer O.N. Pruitt. Student sketch illustrations act as headpieces for the yearbook's major sections for "Seniors," "Junior," "Sophomores," "Freshmen," "Publications," "Organizations," "Clubs," "Athletics," and the concluding fourteen pages of advertisements. The 1927 MEH LADY is Eudora Welty's sophomore yearbook; Miss Welty is pictured on page 132 as a member of the sophomore class with the same headshot duplicated on page 156 for the yearbook staff, page 158 for the Spectator (student newspaper) staff, page 160 for the OH LADY! (literary publication) staff, and page 182 for the Dramatic Club staff. Welty also appears in the cast photograph for the Dramatic Club's presentation of "Icebound" which is reproduced on both pages 183 and 207. Page 219 has a full-page ad for Jackson, Mississippi-based Lamar Life Insurance Company which Eudora's father, Christian Welty, served as President. Welty attended Mississippi State College for Women, now Mississippi University for Women a.k.a. The "W," located in Columbus, Mississippi for her freshman and sophomore years before transferring to University of Wisconsin at Madison. Although Welty did supply drawings for issues of OH LADY!, none of the illustrations on the 1927 MEH LADY bear her initials. Neither the 1926 nor 1927 yearbooks are cited in Noel Polk's EUDORA WELTY; A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HER WORK. Please note that this book has an approximate shipping weight of 3.25 pounds (1.47 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail. Poor condition. Staple-bound sheets, H 29.75 x L 22.5cm, folded horizontally at center. Only pages 5-20 are present, page 5 appears to be the publication's title page; pages 1-4 and 21-22 missing, pages 23-24 presumed missing but unknown for certain if the publication had any pages past 22. Sheets quite edgeworn particularly at…corners and fore-edges; some tears at center folds; interior soiling especially on page 16; pages 5-6 and 19-20 are detached from rusty staples; bottom quarter of page 13-14 cut out. OH LADY!, a campus student humor publication, features three drawings by Eudora Welty with each readily identified with the initialed signatures of "EW." The drawings are "Gentlemen Eating Peanuts" on page 7, "Staff" drawing on page 12, and "H.L. Mencken Singing the Star Spangled Banner in his Morning Tub" on page 16. The first and third drawings are cited on page 434 in the chronology section of Noel Polk's EUDORA WELTY; A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HER WORK but Dr. Polk failed to note the "Staff" drawing. None of the interior text is credited to Miss Welty but she is listed as a member of the OH LADY Art Staff on page 12. Merely 16 years old upon moving to the Columbus, Mississippi and enrolling at Mississippi State College for Women in 1925, Eudora Welty (April 13, 1909-July 23, 2001) had already published drawings and prose in several hometown Jackson, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee publications as well as the national periodical ST. NICHOLAS MAGAZINE. Welty only attended MSCW or "The W" (now known as Mississippi University for Women - MUW) for her freshman and sophomore years before transferring to the University of Wisconsin at Madison from which she graduated with a B.A. in 1929. Welty is one of only a few major American authors with a significant record of published juvenilia and, although the material obviously reflects some youthful frivolity, it does offer delightful insight to Welty's humor and literary development. Albeit an incomplete issue and in poor condition, this copy is still an intriguing Welty item and very scarce if not rare as "The W" had a limited enrollment of several hundred mostly in-state students and thus associated contemporary collegiate ephemera is quite unusual. Unnumbered four pages (apparently missing a center sheet of pages 3-4; i.e. only pages 1-2 and 5-6 are present). Approximate dimensions: H 56.5cm x L 40.75cm. Now folded into fourths; usual newspaper stock with mild toning and soiling as well as strong creases, several short tears at edges mostly affecting margins only, some abr…asion and small paper loss along horizontal center-fold, chipping along top edges with shallow loss at top corners. Six column text with student news, advertisements for local merchants, etc. Fourth column of rear page (i.e. page 6) features "I" FOR IRIS - IRMA, IMOGENE credited at its conclusion to "E. Welty." The prose contribution is comprised of six paragraphs totaling approximately three-fifths (33cm) of the column's text length and is cited as #G10 (page 409) in Noel Polk's EUDORA WELTY; A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HER WORK. Unfortunately this copy lacks the aforementioned center sheet (i.e. pages 3-4) for, according to Noel Polk, page 4 also has an untitled Welty poem (see Polk #G11). Albeit an incomplete issue of THE SPECTATOR, this copy is still an intriguing Welty item and quite scarce as "The W" had a limited enrollment of several hundred mostly in-state students and thus associated contemporary collegiate ephemera is exceptionally difficult to find.
