Añadir al carrito*Sales/posting to the USA suspended*. Hard cover pictorial boards, 98 pp, b&w photos. Very light shelf wear, else very good+. In September 1915, Keith Murdoch, then a young war journalist, wrote an 8000-word letter to the Prime Minister, Andrew Fisher. 'The Gallipoli Letter', as it came to be known, changed the course of the Gallipoli campaign. In sending the letter to the Prime Minister, he broke the strict journalists' embargo and bypassed the military censors. The letter, protesting against the conduct of the campaign and describing conditions at the front, is both intimate and conversational; angry, passionate, vivid and very moving. It was classified and prompted the recall of Hamilton and the secret withdrawal of troops from the Anzac Peninsula: it changed the course of the campaign. As well as the transcription of the letter, and an accompanying facsmile of the original, this includes an introduction by historian Michael McKernan, gives background information of Murdoch and sets the letter in its historical context. Getting scarce.
