THE THREE BEARS (Star No. 1070): short tear at lower spine fold. LONG AGO STORIES (Star No. 1091): fractional loss at top corners at spine head, tearing and surface scuffing along spine fold; features two short tales - "Tom Thumb" and "The Sleeping Beauty" (pages 7-16) with the latter being an extended version of that in the preceding Star No. 1067 but sharing three of the same illustrations. Good copies.

Good condition but for Sallie Mandy book with a few of the puzzles completed in light pencil. Box in Good condition but for a few minor creases and small abraded areas at corners, and with some faint soiling to bottom of box.

Condición: Fine. This fun and educational puzzle map was published in 1942 by the Platt and Munk Company, Inc. of New York. An artist's signature in the lower right, H.R.D., gives a clue as to the creator of the image, though I've been unable to determine the full name. The map presents the continent of North America divided into different countries, with major cities labeled and topography depicted pictorially. Robert Peary's dash to the North Pole is celebrated at the top while a Viking longship and clipper ship are dated in the North Atlantic. Shipping lanes are noted throughout while decorative elements are present in the form of windheads and a compass rose. A charming wartime distraction for children on the American homefront, with the proximity to the Soviet Union emphasized in the upper left. Condición: Fine. "This fun and ostensibly educational children's toy was issued in 1939, shortly before the outbreak of WWII, by the Platt & Munk Company, Inc. of New York. The image and illustrated border share the theme of American expansionism, from the earliest settlement by the Spanish, French, and English to the opening of the Wild West. Pioneers are defined in this context as " one who goes before, preparing the way for others" and they can be seen trekking across the continent throughout the map. Native Americans play a prominent, if stereotypical role; noble savagery juxtaposed against the heroic tide of civilization. 'Indian Country' is apparently defined with a small teepee, though I'm unable to find any examples of the symbol within the map. Forts, buffalo herds, and prairie schooners are well-represented, however. Small illustrations highlight major milestones such as the Gold Rush, Pony Express, and others, while the border pictures are described in the accompanying legend in the lower right. A number of historic trails can be traced across the map, also explained by a corresponding key."
